Trump Urges UK to Send Warships to Secure Strait of Hormuz

Former US President Donald Trump has issued a direct appeal to the United Kingdom, calling for the deployment of warships to help secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This narrow sea passage, which serves as a crucial outlet from the Persian Gulf, is currently under blockade by Iran, severely disrupting the flow of oil from the Middle East and contributing to rising global energy costs.

Global Appeal for Naval Support

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump explicitly named the UK alongside other nations, including France, China, Japan, and South Korea, urging them to contribute naval assets to the effort. He emphasised that these countries are directly impacted by what he described as an "artificial constraint" imposed by Iran on the strait. Trump stated, "Many countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending war ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the strait open and safe."

Iranian Threat and US Military Action

Despite claiming that the US has "already destroyed 100% of Iran’s military capability," Trump warned that Iran could still pose a threat through asymmetric tactics such as deploying drones, laying mines, or launching close-range missiles in the waterway. He asserted, "In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline and continually shooting Iranian boats and ships out of the water." Trump concluded with a forceful declaration: "One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!"

Impact on Global Oil Markets

The blockade has led to significant logistical challenges, with oil tankers and cargo ships reportedly lining up in the strait, unable to pass through. This bottleneck is exacerbating supply chain tensions and pushing energy prices higher across international markets. The situation underscores the strait's critical role in global trade, as a substantial portion of the world's oil shipments transit through this chokepoint.

The call for international naval support highlights the escalating tensions in the region and the potential for broader geopolitical ramifications if the blockade persists. The UK's response to this appeal remains a key point of observation, as it could influence diplomatic and military strategies moving forward.
