John Travolta has marked his 72nd birthday with a significant personal achievement, sharing news that he has obtained a pilot's licence for a new type of aircraft. The celebrated actor, known for roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, took to Instagram on his birthday to announce the milestone.
A Birthday Announcement from the Cockpit
In a video posted on social media, Travolta sat in the cockpit of a jet, enthusiastically revealing his latest accomplishment. "It's my birthday today!" he declared in the caption. "And I'm very proud to say I got my licence in the Global Express! Thank you for all my birthday wishes!"
The clip briefly showcased the type of plane he is now certified to fly, along with footage of the aircraft taking off from the runway. Travolta explained to his followers, "I've just accomplished my licence in the Global Express SIC (second in command). Congratulations to me!"
A Lifelong Passion for Aviation
Beyond his acting career, Travolta has been a licensed pilot since the age of 22 and has served as an ambassador for Qantas Airways since 2002. Over the decades, he has accumulated licences to operate various aircraft, including Boeing 747, 707, and 737 models.
He previously announced earning his 737 licence in a 2022 Instagram post, describing it as "a very proud moment in my aviation history." In that video, he stated, "To add to my 747 and 707 licences, I just received my 737 licence. And it went very well, so just sharing my moment with you."
Family Support and Global Travels
His late wife, Kelly Preston, spoke about Travolta's piloting career in a 2018 interview with The Telegraph, noting they travelled frequently in his planes. "He's had his licence for almost 30 years," she said. "At our house in Ocala, northern Florida, we have the planes parked out front because we have a runway attached. I never get nervous when John's piloting because he's calm in any situation and can handle the pressure. He's flown us all over the world – Russia, South Africa, Australia, Tahiti, the U.K., the U.S. and the Far East."
Travolta's enthusiasm for aviation dates back to his teenage years. In 2020, he shared a throwback photo from when he was 15, captioning it, "Throwback Thursday: When I was 15 years old, my school offered an aviation class which started my second career."
Reflections on the Joy of Flight
In a September 2025 interview with Business Jet Traveler, Travolta reflected on what draws pilots to the profession. "What excites pilots is so varied that I don't even know what the commonalities are, except that it makes them happy because they love the joy of flight," he told the publication. "Some people love the challenge of calculations. Some like the sensation of flight. Some like the objectivity of seeing the world from a different perspective. It lifts their spirits."
This latest licence adds to Travolta's impressive aviation portfolio, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to flying as he celebrates another year.
