Tina Brown Condemns Jeff Bezos and Will Lewis Following Washington Post Staff Cuts
Award-winning editor Tina Brown has delivered a blistering critique of Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos and former publisher Will Lewis, whom she labelled a "junket schmoozer", in response to the gutting of one-third of the newspaper's staff. The dramatic layoffs, which occurred last week, resulted in the elimination of the publication's sports and books coverage alongside significant reductions to its foreign news team.
Massive Layoffs and Executive Departure
The Washington Post confirmed the termination of approximately one-third of its workforce, a move swiftly followed by the resignation of publisher and CEO Will Lewis just days later. In a memo to employees, executive editor Matt Murray outlined the rationale, stating, "The need has never been more urgent to reposition The Post. A more flexible, sustainable model will help us better navigate unprecedented volatility, competition, technological change, news-consumption habits, and cost pressure."
Brown, renowned for her editorial leadership at Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The Daily Beast, used a Substack post to lambast the management decisions. She argued the layoffs "revealed the stark truth that Bezos doesn't understand how to run a news organization any more than Woodward and Bernstein could figure out how to deliver dog kibble to your door by drone."
Brown's Scathing Assessment of Bezos and Lewis
In her detailed critique, Brown contrasted Bezos's earlier stewardship of the Post during Donald Trump's first term with his current approach. She noted, "The Jeff Bezos who bought the Post was a different guy from the one who is allowing its destruction now. But oligarchs gonna oligarch." Highlighting Bezos's net worth exceeding $200 billion, Brown questioned his recent strategic decisions, including the paper's abrupt end to its 36-year tradition of endorsing presidential candidates just before the 2024 election.
Regarding Will Lewis, Brown pointed to his reported attendance at the NFL Honors ceremony before the Super Bowl as emblematic of his management style. "The junket schmooze was always Lewis's MO," she asserted, criticising what she perceived as a focus on networking over substantive leadership. Brown posed the pointed question, "Why did Bezos allow Lewis to fail and flail for so long? The answer can only be that, by that time, Bezos didn't much care."
Official Responses and Leadership Changes
In an email to staff, Lewis expressed gratitude to Bezos for his support and acknowledged the difficult decisions made to ensure the Post's future sustainability. Concurrently, Bezos announced the appointment of Jeff D'Onofrio as acting publisher and CEO, emphasising a data-driven approach. "Each and every day our readers give us a roadmap to success. The data tells us what is valuable and where to focus," Bezos stated.
The Independent has contacted both The Washington Post and Will Lewis for further comment on these developments and the criticisms levelled by Tina Brown.
