Taylor Swift has released a music video paying tribute to Hollywood icon Dame Elizabeth Taylor, but the visual has received a mixed response from fans. The video, which accompanies Swift’s song of the same name, premiered on Apple Music and Spotify on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old singer does not appear in the clip. Instead, it features curated archive footage of Taylor alongside scenes from her classic films, including Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Cleopatra. The video concludes with a thank-you to the House of Taylor, the Elizabeth Taylor Trust, and the Todd and Wilding families.
Some fans expressed disappointment, with one saying, “I’m disappointed … Clipped together from Elizabeth Taylor movies. I was hoping for so much more.” Another wrote, “You could have invested in another type of a music video.” However, others praised the approach. One fan argued: “This was the perfect video … If Taylor was in it, portraying Elizabeth Taylor, it would have been weird and almost disrespectful.” Another called it “iconic.”
The song, which references Taylor’s “violet eyes” and “white diamonds”, is the third single from Swift’s album The Life Of A Showgirl, released last October. Swift has previously spoken of her admiration for the actress, who died in 2011 aged 79. The video is expected on YouTube on Thursday.
