Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kristina Rihanoff has urged the BBC to consider a year-long hiatus for the popular dance competition show. This recommendation comes in response to significant behind-the-scenes changes, including the departure of multiple cast members.
Major Cast Exodus Sparks Concern
Reports indicate that five professional dancers, among them Karen Hauer, the show's longest-serving pro, will not have their contracts renewed for the 2026 season. Additionally, presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman are also stepping away from the programme. Rihanoff expressed deep concern over these developments, particularly criticising the decision regarding Hauer.
Contract Renewal Process Under Fire
Rihanoff described the annual contract renewal process for professional dancers as unfair and stressful, highlighting the instability it creates for performers. She argued that this system contributes to high turnover and could undermine the show's quality and continuity.
Honouring a Legacy
In related news, Rihanoff discussed plans to establish the Robin Windsor Contribution to Dance Award. She aims to create a scholarship fund to support talented young dancers, honouring her late co-star Robin Windsor and his dedication to the art form.
The former pro dancer emphasised that a temporary break would allow the BBC to overhaul production elements and reassess its approach to talent management, potentially revitalising Strictly Come Dancing for future seasons.
