Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has issued a firm declaration of support for Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland, vowing that he "will not yield" in the face of threats from former US President Donald Trump. The statement comes ahead of a crucial diplomatic meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen scheduled for Thursday.
Starmer's Unwavering Stance on Greenland
During Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Sir Keir articulated a clear and principled position regarding the future of the Arctic island. He emphasised that decisions about Greenland must rest solely with its people and the Kingdom of Denmark, rejecting any external pressure or coercion.
Principles and Values at the Forefront
The Prime Minister outlined two core principles guiding the UK's approach. Firstly, he affirmed that the destiny of Greenland is an internal matter for Greenlanders and Denmark. Secondly, he condemned the use of tariff threats as a tool to pressure allies, describing such tactics as "completely wrong."
Sir Keir stated, "I have made my position clear on our principles and values. The first of those is that the future of Greenland is for the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone. The second is that threats of tariffs to pressurise allies are completely wrong."
Imminent Diplomatic Engagement
The timing of Starmer's remarks is significant, as he prepares to host Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in London on Thursday. This meeting is expected to reinforce bilateral ties and discuss shared concerns over Trump's aggressive posturing.
"I will not yield, Britain will not yield on our principles and values about the future of Greenland under threats of tariffs, and that is my clear position," Starmer asserted, highlighting the UK's solidarity with Denmark ahead of the high-level talks.
Trump's Controversial Threats
The backdrop to this diplomatic standoff involves former President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose 10% tariffs on Britain and other European allies from February 1 unless they acquiesce to his proposed purchase of Greenland. Additionally, Trump has refused to rule out the possibility of using military force to seize the strategically important island.
These threats have sparked international concern, with Starmer's firm response positioning the UK as a steadfast ally to Denmark in defending sovereignty and opposing economic coercion. The Prime Minister's unwavering stance underscores a commitment to international norms and the rejection of unilateral actions that undermine diplomatic relations.
