‘Make America Go Away’: Danish Protest Caps Soar Amid Greenland Tensions
Spoof MAGA Caps Symbolise Danish Defiance Over Greenland

In a striking act of political satire, red baseball caps parodying Donald Trump's iconic 'Make America Great Again' slogan have surged in popularity across Denmark, becoming a potent symbol of defiance against the US president's renewed interest in purchasing Greenland.

From Vintage Store to Viral Symbol

The movement began with Copenhagen vintage clothing store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen. He designed the caps, which bear the slogan 'Make America Go Away' on the side. On the front, they feature a clever linguistic twist: 'Nu det NUUK!'. This is a play on the Danish phrase 'Nu det nok' (meaning 'Now it's enough'), substituting the word 'nok' for 'Nuuk', the capital of Greenland.

Tonnesen revealed that initial batches in 2024 failed to gain traction. However, demand exploded into a sell-out weekend after the Trump administration recently escalated its rhetoric regarding Greenland. "When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn't a joke – it's not reality TV, it's actually reality," Tonnesen explained. He has now ordered several thousand more caps to meet the soaring public interest.

A Lighthearted Protest with a Serious Message

The caps became a centrepiece at a weekend demonstration held in freezing weather outside Copenhagen's city hall. Protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags, carrying handmade signs with messages like 'No Means No' and 'Make America Smart Again'.

"I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don't like the president of the United States," said Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore one of the red caps. Fellow protester Kristian Boye emphasised the gathering's dual tone: "I'm here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now. They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it's totally unacceptable."

European Solidarity and Security Concerns

The cap phenomenon reflects a broader geopolitical stance. European governments are rallying behind Denmark and Greenland, citing the imperative to defend Arctic regions. There are significant warnings that President Trump's threats against Greenland's sovereignty actively undermine western security.

What started as a niche product in a Copenhagen shop has transformed into a viral symbol of national pride and resistance. The 'Make America Go Away' caps perfectly encapsulate the Danish and Greenlandic response to an unprecedented geopolitical proposition: a firm, creative, and united 'Nu det nok' – now it's enough.
