Red baseball caps parodying Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan have become a symbol of Danish and Greenlandic defiance against the US president’s threats to seize Greenland. The caps, which read “Make America Go Away,” have surged in popularity following heightened rhetoric from the Trump administration over the Arctic territory.
The hats were created by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, owner of a Copenhagen vintage clothing store. Early batches failed to sell in 2024, but demand skyrocketed after a US delegation visited Greenland. “When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn’t a joke – it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” Tonnesen said. He has now ordered “several thousand” caps after selling out in a single weekend.
The caps were worn at a weekend protest in Copenhagen, where demonstrators waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried signs reading “No Means No” and “Make America Smart Again.” Lars Hermansen, a Copenhagen resident wearing one of the caps, said: “I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States.”
Kristian Boye, another protester, said the gathering struck a lighthearted tone while delivering a serious message. “I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now. They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”
European governments have rallied behind Denmark and Greenland, warning that Trump’s threats undermine western security. The original cap design featured a play on words: “Nu det NUUK!” – a twist on the Danish phrase “Nu det nok” (Now it’s enough), substituting Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
