Sound of Music Star Angela Cartwright Spotted in Rare Los Angeles Appearance
Angela Cartwright, the actress who famously played one of the seven von Trapp children in the classic 1965 film The Sound of Music, was seen in a rare public sighting in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Now 73 years old, Cartwright was photographed taking a break from her creative pursuits to maintain her car in pristine condition.
From Child Star to Creative Multitalent
Cartwright was just 13 years old when she portrayed 10-year-old Brigitta von Trapp in The Sound of Music, which starred Julie Andrews as Governess Maria. The film, set in Austria during the 1930s, went on to win multiple Academy Awards and became a monumental success. Adjusted for inflation, The Sound of Music has earned approximately $2.366 billion in today's prices, ranking it among the top ten highest-grossing films of all time.
However, this iconic role was far from Cartwright's only significant achievement. Her acting career began even earlier, with her first film appearance at age three as Paul Newman's daughter in Somebody Up There Likes Me. She also starred in seven seasons of the US television series Make Room for Daddy before her breakthrough in The Sound of Music.
A Diverse Career Beyond the Silver Screen
Following her success in The Sound of Music, Cartwright continued to build an impressive acting portfolio. Her notable television roles included appearances in:
- Lost in Space
- The Love Boat
- Adam-12
- Beyond the Poseidon Adventure
After having her two children, Jesse and Rebecca Gullion, Cartwright shifted her focus from acting to other artistic endeavors. She has been a professional photographer for more than three decades and has published several books on photography techniques. Additionally, she has explored clothing and jewelry design, showcasing her versatility as a creative professional.
Family Ties and Recent Projects
Acting talent clearly runs in the Cartwright family, as her sister is Veronica Cartwright, known for her role in The X-Files. Angela Cartwright made a cameo appearance in 2019 as Dr. Smith's mother, Sheila Harris, in the Netflix reimagined Lost in Space series. She is set to return to screens soon with a role in the upcoming project Ralph's Perfekt Christmas.
Cartwright has maintained connections with her The Sound of Music co-stars over the years. In the summer of 2023, she reunited with four of them—Nicholas Hammond, Duane Chase, Debbie Turner, and Kym Karath—in Florence, Italy. The group had previously gathered in 2022 to support Julie Andrews when she received the American Film Institute's highest honor at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
During Tuesday's sighting in Los Angeles, Cartwright was clad in a flowing dress and trainers, using a windshield wiper to clean her car window. This simple, everyday activity offered a glimpse into the life of a star who has gracefully transitioned from child actress to multifaceted artist, all while cherishing the legacy of her most famous role.
