SOMBR Confirmed as Latest Performer for 2026 BRIT Awards
The BRIT Awards have announced that American singer-songwriter SOMBR, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, will take to the stage at this year's ceremony on February 28. The 20-year-old musician, who hails from New York City, rose to fame in 2025 with his smash hit single Back To Friends, which topped Spotify's Global and US charts simultaneously.
Rapid Rise to International Stardom
SOMBR's breakthrough track also cracked the Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles and became America's number one pop song. His explosive success led to completely sold-out headline tours across the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. These concerts featured surprise appearances from notable artists including Sam Smith and Laufey, further cementing his growing reputation.
The young artist has received nominations for both International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year for his 2025 single Undressed. SOMBR expressed his excitement about performing at the prestigious event, stating: 'I'm so honoured to be performing at the iconic BRIT Awards. I am so thankful to everyone who has supported me this past year. I love the UK and all the British people, it's my second home!'
Impressive Lineup and Venue Change
SOMBR joins an already spectacular lineup of previously announced performers including Harry Styles, Olivia Dean, EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI (the singing voices of HUNTR/X), Wolf Alice, Mark Ronson, ROSALÍA, and Alex Warren. This year marks a significant change for the awards ceremony as it moves from London's O2 Arena, where it has been held since 2011, to Manchester's Co-op Live arena.
The Daily Mail revealed that the annual showpiece, widely regarded as the biggest night in British music, will likely rotate around different UK locations in future years. Comedian Jack Whitehall returns to host the ceremony for the sixth time, having previously presented in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2025.
Female and Non-Binary Artists Dominate Nominations
This year's BRIT Awards nominations showcase a remarkable turnaround in gender representation. Following criticism in recent years for low female representation—particularly in 2023 when the Artist Of The Year shortlist was entirely male—this year sees 70% of nominations going to female or non-binary artists.
Leading Contenders and Comeback Stories
Lola Young and Olivia Dean lead the nominations with five nods each, closely followed by comeback artist Lily Allen with three nominations. Allen made her major return in October 2025 with her first project in seven years, the revenge album West End Girl, which chronicles the collapse of her marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour.
The 40-year-old singer will compete against Lola Young and Olivia Dean for Artist Of The Year, while also being nominated for Album Of The Year and Pop Act. Lola Young, 24, faces additional nominations for Breakthrough Artist and Alternative/Rock Act, though her attendance remains uncertain following health concerns that caused her to cancel tour dates in late 2024.
Notable Achievements and International Recognition
Olivia Dean, 26, achieved a significant milestone this year by becoming the first woman since Adele in 2021 to simultaneously claim the UK's number one single and album with her song Man I Need and album The Art Of Loving. The BRIT School graduate, who taught herself guitar and piano, will perform at the ceremony alongside her five nominations.
Other notable nominees include Sam Fender with four nominations following his 2025 Mercury Prize win for People Watching, Dave with three nominations including Artist Of The Year, and Raye who returns after her record-breaking six-award sweep last year. British icons Pulp have received their first Group of the Year nomination since 1996.
International Representation and Categories
Hollywood makes a strong showing with Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters group HUNTR/X nominated for International Song of the Year with Golden and International Group. Cynthia Erivo secures her first nomination for her rendition of Defying Gravity from Wicked, competing for Song of the Year with Mastercard.
International stars competing for awards include Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, and Chappell Roan. The ceremony continues its gender-neutral approach, having removed gendered categories like Best Male and Best Female in 2022, though this change initially sparked controversy before this year's more balanced representation.
The 2026 BRIT Awards promise to be a landmark event celebrating both established icons and emerging talent, with improved gender diversity and a new Manchester location adding fresh energy to Britain's premier music celebration.
