Russian Drone Strikes Kill Five in Ukraine, Injure 30 Amid Zelenskyy's Istanbul Visit
Overnight Russian drone strikes across Ukraine have resulted in five fatalities and 30 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Istanbul for diplomatic discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Air Defence Successes and Casualty Details
Ukraine's Air Force reported successfully intercepting 260 out of 286 Russian drones launched during the assault. Despite these defensive efforts, the strikes caused significant casualties and damage across multiple regions.
The fatalities occurred in Nikopol, while residents in Sumy sustained injuries. Infrastructure damage was reported in several cities, including a fire at an office building in Kyiv. Photographs from the Ukrainian Emergency Services showed rescue workers battling flames at a residential building damaged in Sumy.
Russian Claims and Ukrainian Response
Russian authorities stated their forces targeted Ukrainian military installations and energy facilities during the operation. Simultaneously, Russia reported that Ukrainian drone attacks in its Rostov and Samara regions resulted in one death and five injuries.
The timing of these strikes coincides with President Zelenskyy's diplomatic mission to Istanbul, where he engaged in discussions with Turkish leadership and religious figures regarding the ongoing conflict. This development underscores the continuing volatility of the situation despite diplomatic efforts.
Ukrainian emergency services remain active in affected areas, addressing fires and providing medical assistance to those injured in the attacks. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as both sides exchange accusations regarding military actions and civilian casualties.
