Ukrainian officials have confirmed that a series of Russian drone strikes overnight have resulted in the deaths of five people and left thirty more wounded. The attacks occurred as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy embarked on a diplomatic mission to Istanbul for discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians.
Details of the Overnight Assault
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched a total of 286 drones at Ukraine during the night, with 260 successfully intercepted and downed by Ukrainian defences. In an online statement, the military detailed the scale of the aerial bombardment, which targeted multiple regions across the country.
Casualties and Damage in Nikopol
The city of Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region suffered the most severe impact. Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration, reported that five individuals—three women and two men—were killed in the assault. Additionally, nineteen people sustained injuries, including a fourteen-year-old girl. The attack caused significant damage to local infrastructure, destroying market stalls and a shop in the area.
Strikes in Sumy and Kyiv
In Sumy, a city located near the border with Russia, the National Police confirmed that eleven people were injured, one of whom was a fifteen-year-old. Residential areas bore the brunt of the attack, with houses, vehicles, and utility networks all suffering damage. Meanwhile, in the capital Kyiv, a drone strike ignited a fire on the first floor of a three-story office and warehouse building, as stated by Ukraine's State Emergency Service. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the Kyiv incident.
Russian Claims and Retaliatory Actions
The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement on Saturday asserting that its forces had utilised "long-range air- and ground-based precision weapons, as well as strike drones" to target unspecified "military-industrial and energy facilities used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces." This declaration came alongside a separate announcement that the Russian military had shot down eighty-five Ukrainian drones over nine Russian regions, the annexed Crimea region, and the Black Sea overnight.
Impact on Russian Territory
The cross-border conflict also resulted in casualties within Russia. In the Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, governor Yuri Slyusar reported one fatality and four injuries. The attack triggered a fire at a warehouse facility belonging to an unspecified logistics company and another blaze on a foreign-flagged dry-cargo vessel several kilometres from the shore. Additionally, in the city of Tolyatti in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed one person was wounded, with a residential building's roof damaged and windows shattered in several apartments.
The escalation in hostilities underscores the ongoing volatility in the region, even as diplomatic efforts continue. President Zelenskyy's visit to Turkey aims to bolster international support, while the latest strikes highlight the persistent threat to civilian areas and critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
