UK Passport Holders Warned Over '3-Week Rule' for Summer Travel
UK Passport Holders Warned Over '3-Week Rule'

Millions of Britons planning a summer break are being advised to stick to a passport "3-week rule" following a fresh warning from His Majesty's Passport Office. The government body states that travellers ought to allow a minimum of three weeks for their passport application to be handled and has cautioned that certain cases may take longer if extra checks are necessary.

Reminder Amid Holiday Season

The reminder arrives as families prepare to travel abroad during the busy holiday period, when demand for passport renewals typically rises. In a statement to travellers, His Majesty's Passport Office said: "Sun, sea & stress-free travel. Apply early - UK passports usually arrive within 3 weeks (longer if checks needed)."

Official guidance indicates that standard passport applications submitted in the UK are typically handled within three weeks from when the Passport Office receives the necessary documents. Nevertheless, officials emphasise that not every application can be completed within that period, reports the Express.

Government Guidance

Government guidance states: "You'll usually get your passport within 3 weeks. It may take longer than 3 weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We'll tell you this within 3 weeks." The Passport Office is also cautioning Britons against booking holidays before their new passport has been delivered.

Its guidance states: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport - your new passport will not have the same number as your old one." This guidance is especially important for anyone whose passport is set to expire before an upcoming holiday.

Post-Brexit Travel Rules

Since Brexit, many European destinations now require British passports to have been issued within the previous 10 years and to retain at least three months' validity remaining on the date of departure from the country being visited. Travel industry specialists regularly caution that passengers can be turned away at the gate if their passport fails to meet the entry requirements of their chosen destination.

Urgent Passport Services

Brits who need a passport more urgently may be able to take advantage of the Passport Office's premium services, including the Online Premium and One Week Fast Track options, though these come at a greater cost than the standard application process. Passport applications can be made online or by completing a paper form available from Post Office branches, although paper applications carry an additional fee.

Those who have already applied can monitor the progress of their application through the Government's online passport tracking service.

Passport Processing Times

The standard UK passport application service typically takes up to three weeks to process. For those needing a passport more urgently, the One Week Fast Track service aims to issue a passport within seven days.

Travellers requiring a passport immediately can use the Online Premium service, which offers a same-day appointment and passport issuance. The Passport Office states that processing times only begin once all the required documents have been received, meaning any delays in providing paperwork can lengthen the overall time it takes to receive a new passport.
