Russian Commander's Brutal Punishment of Soldiers Tied to Trees in Ukraine War

Disturbing video footage has emerged showing a Russian frontline commander brutally punishing soldiers accused of desertion by stripping them and tying them to trees in subzero temperatures. The men, described by their officer as "idiots, alcoholics, and cowards," were taped to trees with snow on the ground while wearing only underwear, with signs hung around their necks bearing insulting labels.

Graphic Scenes of Abuse and Humiliation

The video captures the foul-mouthed commander berating and beating four soldiers he calls "refuseniks" for allegedly leaving their positions in Russia's war in Ukraine. Signs on the men read: "****ing idiot," "Alcoholic," "Coward," and "I complained about the commander." The commander is heard sneering, "Look, look [at] our ****ing valiant ****ing Walk of Fame," as he criticizes the quality of troops being sent to the frontline.

One soldier pleaded, "I won't do that again. I won't do that again," after being accused of drunkenness. The commander retorted, "You have to follow ****ing orders." Another older fighter was shouted at for disobedience, with the officer saying, "You see, old man, you've lived longer than me, right? You know more than me, than your commander, right?" When the fighter apologized, the abuse continued: "What the ****, I'm sorry, I give orders, they have to be carried out, right?"

Pattern of Brutal Torture in Russian Military

This incident is not isolated. In January, another video showed a Russian soldier taped upside down to a tree in freezing conditions near the frontline, while another was forced to eat snow by a superior officer. In that case, the frightened men wore only underwear after being stripped of their winter uniforms. Their commander barked, "[They] wanted to **** off from their positions, not follow orders," and forced snow into one man's mouth, saying, "Eat, you ****ing *****." One of the taped men desperately pleaded, "I'm sorry, it won't happen again," only to be mocked with insults about his masculinity.

These vile scenes highlight the harsh discipline and torture reportedly commonplace within Putin's military machine, as soldiers face extreme punishment for perceived cowardice or disobedience.

Broader Context of Russian Losses and Recruitment

The brutality comes amid revelations from British Defence Secretary John Healey that Ukraine has inflicted heavier losses on Russia in the past two months than the Kremlin has managed to recruit new troops. Healey noted that Putin is increasingly relying on foreign fighters, often recruited under false pretences and press-ganged into service without realizing they are destined for the "Russian meat machine" on the frontline in Ukraine.

It is estimated that around 17,000 North Korean soldiers are currently participating in combat on Russia's side. Last year, Russia suffered approximately 415,000 casualties—killed and wounded—in the war, underscoring the severe toll and the desperate measures being taken to maintain frontline forces.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities faced by soldiers in the conflict, where internal discipline can be as harsh as the external threats, raising questions about morale and ethics within the Russian military ranks.
