Cameroon has announced that Russia has formally confirmed the deaths of 16 Cameroonian soldiers serving in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This confirmation was delivered through a diplomatic memo addressed to the Russian Embassy in the central African nation, according to a statement from Cameroon's foreign affairs ministry.
Official Confirmation and Diplomatic Communication
The ministry's memo explicitly acknowledged the loss of these 16 soldiers within what it described as the special military operations zone in Ukraine. In response, the ministry indicated that necessary arrangements have been initiated to contact and support the bereaved families of the deceased servicemen.
Urgent Notices to Families
On the same day, a separate and urgent message was dispatched by the ministry, inviting the families of six other Cameroonian nationals currently residing in Russia to attend the ministry for discussions concerning pressing matters. The communication did not elaborate on the specific nature of these urgent issues, leaving details undisclosed.
Background of African Recruitment in the Conflict
This development occurs against a backdrop of increasing concerns over the recruitment of African nationals into the Ukraine war. Ukrainian authorities have asserted that more than 1,700 Africans have been enlisted to fight on behalf of Russia. Several African countries have reported instances where their citizens were deceived into joining the conflict through offers of lucrative employment or skills training programs that turned out to be fronts for military recruitment.
Regional Cases and Investigations
Earlier this year, an intelligence report presented to the Kenyan parliament revealed that approximately 1,000 Kenyans were recruited under false pretences, promised jobs in Russia only to be deployed to the front lines in Ukraine. In a related incident, Ukraine's intelligence agency disclosed this month that two Nigerian nationals were killed late last year while fighting for Russian forces.
Furthermore, an Associated Press investigation in 2024 uncovered that African women were also manipulated into contributing to the Russian war effort. They were enticed by social media advertisements promoting work-study programs, only to be sent to work in a factory assembling attack drones intended for use against Ukrainian targets.
Cameroon's Preventive Measures
In March of the previous year, Cameroon's defense minister issued directives to the nation's various military high commands, mandating the implementation of strict emergency measures. These measures were specifically designed to prevent further defections by both active and retired Cameroonian soldiers, highlighting the government's proactive stance in addressing the issue of its citizens being drawn into foreign conflicts.
