Rachel Zegler's Olivier-Winning Evita Revival to Open on Broadway in 2027
Rachel Zegler's Evita to Hit Broadway in 2027

After months of speculation, the award-winning revival of Evita will officially transfer to Broadway in spring 2027. The West End production, which starred Rachel Zegler in the lead role, earned her an Olivier Award, and she will reprise her performance in New York.

A Triumphant Revival

The new take on Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical about activist and actor Eva Perón is directed by Jamie Lloyd, who previously won a Tony for his revival of Sunset Boulevard. Evita was last staged on Broadway in 2012, starring Elena Roger and Ricky Martin.

“Performing Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s brilliant show in London was a dream come true, but being able to partner once again with Jamie to bring Evita to Broadway is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Zegler said in a statement. “I can’t wait to perform for my home, New York City.”

A New Vision for Broadway

Lloyd said he was “overwhelmed” by the response in London but will be working on a revised version for Broadway. “When we started discussing a New York production, it became apparent that our Palladium staging of ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ would not be possible,” he said. “I am really excited to explore a new idea, made especially for Broadway.”

The London production made headlines for its unique and divisive staging, which saw Zegler perform the iconic song on a balcony to passersby. The Guardian's Mark Lawson referred to it as a “gimmick” that betrayed those who purchased expensive tickets. In an interview last month, Lloyd cited safety concerns as a reason not to replicate this in New York. “The one thing that absolutely cannot happen is what we did in London on the balcony,” he said. “We can’t do that in New York. I mean, something awful could happen. We have gun laws in Britain.”

In a three-star review, the Guardian’s Arifa Akbar called Zegler’s performance “phenomenal” but criticized the show’s bombast and lack of subtlety.

Zegler’s Rising Star

Zegler’s big-screen credits include West Side Story and Snow White, and she made her Broadway debut in 2024’s Romeo + Juliet. Evita will join other previously announced Broadway shows in 2027, such as The Full Monty, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and David Hare’s Montauk starring Laura Linney.
