The regime led by Crown Prince Mohammed has faced extensive criticism from numerous human rights organisations. Allegations include the extensive use of the death penalty, targeting individuals exercising their rights to freedom of expression, and presiding over a culture where migrant workers frequently face abuses.
Crown Prince Mohammed's international reputation was significantly damaged by a US intelligence determination which stated he ordered the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has faced accusations of sports washing – investing heavily in major sporting events, such as the upcoming 2034 World Cup which it will host, to distract from alleged wrongdoing and present a more favourable international image.
Strengthening UK-Saudi Relations
The Starmer Government has notably reinforced diplomatic and economic ties with Saudi Arabia through recent high-profile visits by both the Chancellor and the Foreign Secretary. William's trip follows this pattern of engagement and represents his first visit to the Middle East since 2023, when he travelled to Kuwait to pay condolences following the death of its former ruling emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

During his three-day itinerary, the Prince of Wales will dedicate time to meeting the next generation of young Saudi citizens. He will hear detailed presentations about the country's ambitious future plans, including its significant commitments to sustainability initiatives.

This diplomatic mission comes at a time when the royal family has been making headlines for other reasons, specifically concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Andrew, who recently relocated from Royal Lodge to the Sandringham estate, is confronting a series of fresh allegations connected to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
These new claims include allegations that a second woman was sent to the UK by the convicted paedophile Epstein for a purported sexual encounter with Andrew. Additional allegations suggest that both Andrew and Epstein asked an exotic dancer for a threesome at Epstein's Florida residence.
