Welsh actor Osian Morgan on 'challenge' of playing Huw Edwards victim in Channel 5 drama

Welsh actor Osian Morgan has spoken about the challenge of portraying a vulnerable 17-year-old allegedly groomed by former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards in a new Channel 5 factual drama.

The drama, titled Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, airs on Tuesday, March 24 at 9pm on Channel 5. It stars Martin Clunes as Edwards and examines how a teenager was allegedly groomed by one of the most influential figures in television.

Morgan, known for roles in Under Salt Marsh, Emmerdale, Waterloo Road and Pobol y Cwm, plays 'Ryan' – the name given to the young man at the centre of the story. He said he was initially unaware of the subject matter when approached, as the project was referred to as 'Untitled Welsh Project' and Edwards' character was called 'Stuart'.

The actor said he was drawn to playing a softer, more vulnerable character after often being cast as confident antagonists. He described the role as a 'real challenge' but an 'honour'.

Morgan added that he never met the real Ryan, as director Michael Samuels wanted him to use his instincts rather than create an impersonation. He expressed hope that the drama would offer validation to Ryan and his family, and that the focus on the survivor rather than the perpetrator was important.
