Jean-Christophe Novelli Leads Emotional Tributes to Late Great British Menu Star Chris Wheeler
The culinary world is in mourning following the death of celebrated chef Chris Wheeler, best known for his appearances on BBC's Great British Menu and ITV's Hell's Kitchen. Leading the tributes is his longtime friend and mentor, celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, who shared a heartfelt message on social media.
A Devastating Loss for the Industry
In an emotional Instagram post, Novelli described Wheeler as an "extraordinary chef, but even more extraordinary as a man", highlighting his warmth, generosity, and kindness. The Hurlingham Club in London, where Wheeler served as executive chef, confirmed his passing, sending shockwaves through the hospitality community.
Novelli wrote: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I say goodbye to my dear friend, Chris Wheeler. His loss is a devastating blow to the industry and to humanity." The two chefs shared a professional relationship spanning more than three decades, beginning when Novelli spotted Wheeler's talent as a teenage college student in France.
A Remarkable Career Spanning Decades
Wheeler's culinary journey was nothing short of remarkable. After beginning his career in French kitchens as a teenager, he worked alongside Novelli at numerous establishments before they parted ways professionally in the early 2000s. Wheeler then ascended to become executive chef at the prestigious Stoke Park Country Club, Spa & Hotel in Buckinghamshire, where his leadership helped the venue thrive.
His television appearances brought him wider recognition, particularly his participation in the 2016 series of Great British Menu, where he represented the south west and cooked for guest judge Grace Dent. Wheeler also made memorable contributions to Saturday Kitchen, showcasing his expertise to weekend audiences.
Beyond the Kitchen: Charitable Work and Showbiz Connections
Wheeler's influence extended beyond restaurant kitchens and television studios. He demonstrated his commitment to charity by completing the London Marathon in 2006 while dressed as a chef and flipping a pancake to raise funds for Get Kids Going. His showbiz connections included baking the cake featured in Daniel Craig's 2004 film Layer Cake, showcasing his versatility and attention to detail.
Novelli's tribute continued: "For more than 30 years he was more than a friend to me – he was my rock. I was always so proud to see him enjoy the success he deserved and I will miss him forever." The celebrity chef extended his thoughts to Wheeler's wife Simona and their daughters during this difficult time.
Industry Colleagues Join in Mourning
Fellow chef Chris Plow has also paid tribute on social media, writing: "My thoughts are with his wife and his two daughters at this heartbreaking time. Rest easy, Chef. Your spirit, your laugh, and your love for the craft will be remembered by so many."
Novelli concluded his emotional message with a call to honor Wheeler's legacy: "May we honour his memory by cooking with the same passion, humility, and love that he brought to every single day." The culinary community continues to share memories and condolences as they remember a chef whose impact reached far beyond the kitchen.
