Norwegian Ambassador Steps Down Following Epstein Investigation Launch
A prominent Norwegian diplomat has resigned from her position after authorities initiated an investigation into her connections with the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mona Juul, who served as Norway's ambassador to both Jordan and Iraq, finds herself among several high-profile Norwegian individuals implicated in the recent Epstein document releases.
Diplomatic Career and Suspension
The senior diplomat, who played a crucial role in the secret Israeli-Palestinian negotiations that culminated in the Oslo Accords during the early 1990s, was temporarily suspended on Monday pending the investigation into her alleged associations with Epstein. Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges.
According to Norwegian media reports, Epstein bequeathed approximately £7.4 million in his will to Juul's two children, whom she shares with her husband Terje Rod-Larsen, a fellow diplomat and broker of the Oslo peace talks.
Government Response and Investigation
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated, "This is a correct and necessary decision. Juul's contact with the convicted abuser Epstein has shown a serious lapse in judgement." Eide emphasized that the ministry would continue discussions with Juul throughout the review process to determine the full extent of their dealings.
"It is important to understand the scope of the contact she, as an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has had with Epstein," he added. The Jordan embassy will be managed by the deputy ambassador until a new envoy is officially appointed.
Legal Representation and Personal Strain
Thomas Skjelbred, Juul's legal representative, explained in a statement that she resigned because "the situation she now finds herself in makes it impossible for her to discharge her duties in a responsible manner." Skjelbred noted that the circumstances had placed "an enormous personal strain on her and her immediate family," confirming that Juul would continue cooperating with the foreign ministry throughout the investigation.
Broader Norwegian Connections to Epstein
Norway's political and royal circles have been significantly impacted by the Epstein revelations. Borge Brende, CEO of the World Economic Forum, has been found to have participated in three business dinners with Epstein and communicated with the convicted sex offender via email and text messages. Brende is currently under investigation by the WEF, which he personally requested.
Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland is also being investigated for "aggravated corruption" in relation to Epstein connections. Jagland's lawyer, Anders Brosveet, welcomed the investigation's commencement, telling Reuters, "Based on what we have found so far, we are confident of the outcome."
Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has additionally faced scrutiny for her relationship with Epstein, expressing on Friday that she "deeply regretted" the association.
Epstein's Criminal Case and Death
Epstein's death abruptly terminated one of the most closely monitored federal criminal cases in recent history. Prosecutors had accused him of operating a years-long sex trafficking operation involving underage girls, with alleged victims describing abuse spanning multiple states and countries.
His arrest in July 2019 followed years of scrutiny over a controversial plea agreement reached in Florida in 2008, which allowed him to avoid federal prosecution at that time. The new charges brought in New York exposed Epstein to potential decades of imprisonment if convicted.
Prison Failures and Investigation Details
Epstein's death occurred amid multiple security failures at one of the federal government's most secure detention facilities. Prison records indicate that guards assigned to monitor Epstein failed to conduct required checks during the overnight hours preceding his body's discovery. Scheduled rounds at 3am and 5am were missed according to official findings.
Furthermore, surveillance cameras positioned outside Epstein's cell malfunctioned that night, with investigators confirming that at least two cameras were not functioning properly, creating critical gaps in visual monitoring. These failures prevented officials from establishing a definitive timeline of Epstein's final moments, and to this day, no precise official time of death has been determined.
Newly Released Surveillance Information
The recently released Department of Justice files contain additional details reviewed by investigators following Epstein's death, including surveillance observations from inside the facility. According to the records, FBI investigators and the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General identified footage showing what appeared to be an unidentified figure moving toward the floor where Epstein was housed.
The footage reportedly captured an orange-coloured shape ascending a staircase near Epstein's housing unit during the overnight hours. Investigators noted the movement but did not publicly conclude whether the figure had any direct connection to Epstein or his death. The surveillance system's limitations and malfunctions prevented investigators from reconstructing a complete visual record of activity in the unit.
