In a deeply personal and moving health update, former America's Next Top Model judge J. Alexander, widely known as Miss J, has revealed he can no longer walk following a devastating stroke he suffered three years ago. The beloved reality TV personality, a fan favourite on the modelling competition until his departure in 2012, shares his harrowing experience in the new Netflix documentary, Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model.
Miss J's Stroke and Coma Details
Miss J opens up in episode three of the docuseries, recounting that on December 27, 2022, he had a stroke that left him hospitalised and in a comatose state for five weeks. He describes waking up disoriented, unable to walk or speak, and breaking down in tears from the emotional toll. "It was emotional, I cried. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried," he admitted, highlighting the profound impact of the health crisis.
Support from Co-Stars During Recovery
During this challenging period, Miss J found solace in the support of his former ANTM co-stars, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker. Both visited him in the hospital, offering comfort and empathy. Nigel Barker described the visit as "really upsetting and horrifying and scary," while Jay Manuel noted he could sense Miss J's distress, imagining the mental struggle he faced.
Ongoing Recovery and Determination
Although Miss J has regained his speech, he continues to work tirelessly towards regaining his ability to walk. In a heart-breaking admission, he expressed missing his role as the "queen of the runway," stating, "I'm the person who taught models how to walk. And now I can't walk." However, he remains determined, adding, "Not yet. I'm determined to walk. I'm sure you're gonna see me again. It's not over for me yet."
Tyra Banks' Absence Noted
Over three years since his stroke, Miss J claims that his former boss, supermodel Tyra Banks, has yet to visit him in person, though he acknowledges she has sent a text message expressing eagerness to see him. This detail adds a layer of poignancy to his recovery journey, contrasting with the support from other colleagues.
Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, which delves into the behind-the-scenes stories of the iconic show, is currently available for streaming on Netflix, offering viewers an intimate look at Miss J's resilience and the broader impact of the series.
