The Commissioner of Scotland Yard issued a stark warning tonight regarding the 'grave' threat emanating from Iran, as he mobilised hundreds of additional police officers to safeguard the Jewish community in London following a devastating firebomb assault. This deployment comes in response to what authorities have described as a 'sickening' raid targeting a Jewish volunteer ambulance service.
Attack on Golders Green Synagogue
In the early hours of this morning, three hooded individuals were captured on closed-circuit television footage setting four ambulances ablaze outside a synagogue in the Golders Green area of north-west London. The vehicles, which belonged to the Hatzola Jewish community ambulance service, were doused with accelerant before being ignited, causing the perpetrators to flee the scene.
Chillingly, oxygen gas canisters stored inside the emergency vehicles exploded at approximately 1:45 am, resulting in the windows of the synagogue and several adjacent residential properties being blown out. As a precautionary measure, local residents were evacuated from their homes, although fortunately no injuries were reported from the attack on this vital service, established in 1979 to provide free medical transport and emergency response to north London communities.
Counter-Terrorism Investigation Underway
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the incident is being treated as an anti-Semitic hate crime, with their specialist counter-terrorism command also actively investigating due to emerging suspicions of potential Iranian state involvement. Officers are currently scouring extensive CCTV footage to trace the escape route of the three suspects and identify those responsible.
Within hours of the attack, a video was published on the Telegram messaging platform by an Islamist organisation calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. This group, whose name translates as 'Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right', displayed a map pinpointing the location alongside footage of the raging fires. Three of the community ambulances were completely destroyed, reduced to charred and fragmented wreckage following the internal explosions.
Commissioner's Grave Warning
Speaking tonight at the annual dinner of the Community Security Trust, a charity dedicated to protecting the Jewish community, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley delivered a sobering assessment. 'The rapid growth in recent years of Iranian state threats is grave: hostile state surveillance activity, twenty disrupted plots, and recent attempted attacks on the Iranian diaspora,' Sir Mark stated. 'None of this is isolated – it is part of a rapidly shifting threat landscape.'
While emphasising that it remains premature to definitively attribute the Golders Green attack to the Iranian state, a determination that will properly fall to the ongoing counter-terrorism investigation, Sir Mark underscored the seriousness of the impact regardless of the perpetrators' identity. 'We are pursuing all lines of enquiry, including an online claim of responsibility by an Islamist group who have claimed other attacks across Europe and have potential Iranian state links,' he added.
The Commissioner praised the swift local response to the attack, which he believes saved lives, and declared: 'An attack on Hatzola is not only an attack on the Jewish community but on all of us. There is no "us and them". There is only an attack on a British community.'
Political Condemnation and Community Fear
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood echoed these sentiments, warning of a dangerous escalation in anti-Semitism across Britain and characterising the firebombing as 'an attack on this country and on us all'. She spoke poignantly of 'the oldest hatred rising once more', suggesting that Jewish citizens in the United Kingdom are now enduring lives of constant apprehension and fear.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his 'disgust at the horrific anti-Semitic attack', while Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who visited the scene, described it as 'a particularly sickening assault'. Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who faced some heckling during his visit to Golders Green, confirmed that the Government would provide funding to replace the destroyed ambulances.
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented
In response to the heightened threat, the Metropolitan Police are significantly intensifying their protective operations. This includes stepping up firearms patrols and deploying an additional 264 officers to work alongside existing neighbourhood policing teams at what are deemed 'vulnerable locations' within the Jewish community.
The force will also employ drone technology as part of its enhanced surveillance capabilities. Furthermore, Sir Mark announced a strengthened protective security plan for Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centres in the lead-up to the Passover holiday period.
Investigating the Claim of Responsibility
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams stated tonight that verifying the claims made by the Islamist group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia is an investigative 'priority'. This organisation rose to prominence after claiming responsibility for a series of anti-Semitic attacks across Europe between March 9th and 13th, which were similarly executed under cover of darkness.
Its claimed operations include an explosive device detonated at a synagogue in Liège, Belgium, an arson attack on a Rotterdam synagogue, and the setting off of a device at a Jewish school in Amsterdam. The group has now explicitly spoken of 'targeting the most prominent Zionist centres in London'.
Analyst Perspectives on Iranian Links
Security analysts have pointed to potential Iranian orchestration behind these attacks. Joe Truzman, an analyst for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed his suspicion: 'We are observing an Iran-crafted front, meaning this is an organisation created by Iran, perhaps the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, to carry out attacks against Jewish institutions. I suspect Iran is outsourcing these attacks to criminal organisations.'
This perspective finds support from Israel's ministry for diaspora affairs and combating anti-Semitism, which noted the group's suspected links to pro-Iranian networks. The Metropolitan Police have recently documented a surge in threats originating from Iran and its associated criminal proxies.
Just last week, the alleged ringleaders of a separate Tehran-led plot to conduct surveillance on the Jewish community in London were formally charged by police. This incident follows the tragic attack in October where two worshippers were killed at a synagogue in Manchester, underscoring a concerning pattern of violence.
The Home Secretary concluded her remarks with a powerful reflection on the broader implications: 'To target Hatzola, an institution devoted to saving lives... is so warped it defies words. Today, Jews in this country are being forced to live a smaller life: they are hiding the signs of their faith. They are fearful as they send their children to school. Even when they attend a hospital appointment. They attend synagogues that require security. History has repeatedly screamed its warning at us. And yet, here we are again, with the oldest hatred rising once more.'
