Former Lost star Matthew Fox has opened up about his decision to take a seven-year hiatus from acting, revealing that family priorities were the driving force behind his extended break from the screen. The actor, now 59, famously portrayed Dr. Jack Shephard throughout all six seasons of the hit survival drama Lost, which aired from 2004 to 2010.
A Career Pause for Personal Priorities
Following his tenure on Lost, Fox appeared in several film projects, including Emperor in 2012, World War Z in 2013, and Bone Tomahawk in 2015. However, after that, he deliberately stepped away from the acting world for an extended period, not returning until the 2022 miniseries Last Light and the 2023 series C*A*U*G*H*T.
In a recent interview with Variety at the premiere of his new series, Fox explained his reasoning. "I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family. I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films," he stated. Fox shares two children, daughter Kyle and son Byron, with his wife Margherita Ronchi, whom he has been married to for nearly 35 years.
Finding Balance After the Break
"So it was the right moment for me to step back, take time to engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world. And I did that, and then I kinda missed storytelling, and this opportunity came along from Taylor and I was like, 'Yeah I’m in,'" Fox added, referring to his upcoming role in Taylor Sheridan's new series, The Madison. "Now I have a balance."
The Emmy-nominated actor was cast in The Madison in 2024, joining a star-studded ensemble that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, and Beau Garrett. Originally conceived as a sequel to Sheridan's popular Western drama Yellowstone, the project has evolved into a standalone series set within the same universe but focusing on a different family.
The Madison: A New Chapter in the Yellowstone World
Teased as Sheridan's "most intimate work to date," according to an official logline, The Madison explores family bonds across two distinct settings: the scenic landscapes of Montana and the bustling energy of Manhattan. Director Christina Alexandra Voros emphasized in a 2024 interview with Variety that the series offers a fresh perspective.
"The common ground is the landscape," Voros explained. "We are in Montana, but it is seen through a completely different lens, so it feels like another facet of this cut stone that has been polished. There are parallels in the scope of landscape and a human being’s place in that space, but it’s coming at it from a completely different point of view."
The Madison is set to premiere its first three episodes on Paramount+ on Saturday, March 14, with the final three episodes releasing on March 21. This marks Fox's significant return to a major television role after his self-imposed hiatus, blending his renewed passion for storytelling with the personal fulfillment he gained from his time away.
