MAFS Community Unites in Support of Mel Schilling After Terminal Diagnosis
Beloved television personality and Married At First Sight stalwart Mel Schilling has shared devastating news with her followers, revealing she has received a terminal cancer diagnosis. The 54-year-old star, known for her role as an expert on both the UK and Australian versions of the popular reality series, made the heartbreaking announcement via social media, stating 'My light is starting to fade'.
A Journey of Courage and Resilience
Schilling's health battle began in December 2023 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer following the discovery of a tumour during medical scans. After successful surgery to remove the growth, she initially received positive news. However, in February 2024, routine scans revealed the cancer had metastasised to her lungs, marking a significant turn in her prognosis.
Over the subsequent two years, while continuing her work on MAFS, Schilling underwent sixteen rounds of chemotherapy. She had been scheduled to begin a groundbreaking clinical trial this month, specifically tailored to her gene type, which had offered renewed hope. Tragically, over the recent Christmas period, she began experiencing severe symptoms including blinding headaches and numbness, leading to the discovery that the cancer had spread to her brain.
'Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do,' Schilling revealed in her emotional statement. 'Hearing those words changes everything.'
An Outpouring of Love from the MAFS Family
In the wake of her announcement, Schilling has been flooded with messages of support from across the Married At First Sight community. Her fellow MAFS experts led the tributes, with Paul C Brunson expressing profound admiration for her strength and courage.
'Mel - your strength, and the way you've faced everything head on, is something I've always deeply admired about you,' Brunson wrote. 'You're the epitome of a fighter, and your courage has always meant a lot to me. I'll carry that with me always.'
Charlene Douglas, who shares the MAFS expert panel with Schilling and Brunson, posted a series of nostalgic photographs from their time on the show alongside a heartfelt caption: 'Always in my heart Love you so much.'
Former Participants Share Their Tributes
The support extended beyond the expert panel to include numerous former MAFS participants who have been touched by Schilling's guidance and friendship over the years. Jay Howard, from the 2023 series, described the news as heartbreaking, praising Schilling's incredible strength and the positive impact she has had on countless lives.
'You are a true warrior and an incredible woman,' Howard wrote. 'The amount of people's lives you've touched and helped including myself over the years is just amazing.'
Leigh Harris, who appeared on the 2025 series, expressed similar sentiments, calling Schilling one of the most incredible women she has ever met and highlighting the lasting legacy of wisdom she has imparted. Ella, another participant from the 2023 series, spoke of her privilege in calling Schilling a friend and sent prayers to her and her family during this difficult time.
A Message of Awareness and Gratitude
In her poignant statement, Schilling emphasized the importance of health awareness, urging others to seek medical attention if something doesn't feel right. 'It might just save your life,' she advised, turning her personal tragedy into a potential lifesaving message for others.
She also expressed profound gratitude for the support she has received throughout her journey, acknowledging how messages from fans and followers have helped shape the resilient mindset needed to continue fighting. Despite the terminal prognosis, Schilling remains determined, stating she will fight to her last breath while surrounded by the love of her family, particularly her husband Gareth and daughter Maddie, whom she described as 'my everything.'
The entertainment community continues to rally around Schilling, whose grace and courage in facing this devastating diagnosis have inspired an outpouring of love and support from colleagues, friends, and fans across the globe.
