Mel Schilling, the relationship coach known for her work on both the Australian and UK versions of Married at First Sight (MAFS), has died at the age of 54. The Australian TV star passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by loved ones, according to a family statement.
Schilling had announced earlier in March that her cancer had spread, including to the left side of her brain, and that doctors could no longer treat it. She had undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy during filming for MAFS.
Her husband Gareth paid tribute in a statement, saying: 'Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love. In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life.'
He added: 'To most of you, she was Mel Schilling – matriarch of Mafs and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.'
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and former contestants. Author Elizabeth Day, who hosted the How To Date podcast with Schilling, described her as 'a radiant, shining light'. Australian co-star John Aiken said it was 'not fair that my partner in crime is gone'. Former contestants including Michael Brunelli and Tayah Aveling credited Schilling with helping their relationships succeed.
Channel 4, which broadcasts the UK version of MAFS, said Schilling 'radiated joy, warmth and optimism'. Nine, the Australian broadcaster, said it was 'deeply saddened' by the news.
