Kurt Russell Opens Up About Emotional Toll of The Madison Scripts
In an exclusive interview, Hollywood legend Kurt Russell has candidly revealed the profound emotional impact of reading the scripts for the new Paramount+ series The Madison. The veteran actor, who stars as family patriarch Preston Clyburn, admitted he frequently had to put the scripts down to process the heavy themes.
A Heartfelt Reunion with Michelle Pfeiffer
Russell expressed particular enthusiasm about reuniting with co-star Michelle Pfeiffer, with whom he previously worked in the 1980s film Tequila Sunrise. "I just love the fact... her being cast in this role was spot on," Russell told Reach PLC. "I knew that when I read the first four scripts. I could just see her all the way through it."
The series, created by Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan, follows a New York family whose lives are shattered by tragedy, forcing them to relocate to Montana's sweeping valleys. Russell praised the "wonderful experience" of working with Pfeiffer again, describing the on-set atmosphere as a "circle of love" where cast and crew "go into battle together" to create something meaningful.
Navigating Heavy Emotional Territory
Russell didn't shy away from discussing the challenging nature of the material. "It was hard to get through them," he confessed about the scripts. "Many different times during reading them, I would have to put it down to let it set in. It's an emotional experience, high and low."
Despite the difficult subject matter, Russell believes the series will resonate deeply with audiences. "I do think there's a high level of relatability here for a lot of people from all walks of life," he observed. "Taylor deals with that in a really interesting and compelling way."
Montana and New York as Central Characters
The actor also highlighted the importance of the series' contrasting locations. "One of my favourite locations in this show is the New York apartment," Russell explained. "These places - Montana and New York City - are characters in the show."
He elaborated on the narrative significance: "This family from New York are all fish out of water because of the tragedy they experienced, and they are all going to go to Montana. For me, as far as playing Preston and his love for what he shares with his brother in Montana, I just love what Taylor has written... as the perfect juxtaposition of the two locations."
The Madison represents another ambitious project from Taylor Sheridan, whose Yellowstone franchise has redefined modern television westerns. With Russell and Pfeiffer leading the cast, the series promises to deliver both star power and emotional depth to Paramount+ subscribers.
