Keanu Reeves Shares Unfiltered Advice for Aspiring Actors
Keanu Reeves has delivered blunt, expletive-laden guidance for up-and-coming actors, drawing from his over three decades of experience in the film industry. The 61-year-old Canadian star, known for roles in John Wick and The Matrix, emphasised the importance of professionalism and respect in a recent interview with E! News.
Reeves' Direct Message to Newcomers
"Try not to be a f***ing asshole," Reeves stated candidly. "And go to work and respect who you’re working with until they prove they don’t get your respect." This straightforward advice highlights his no-nonsense approach to navigating Hollywood's often challenging landscape.
Reeves was joined by his Outcome co-stars Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer, who echoed his sentiments. Diaz added, "Yeah. That’s life," while noting that fame lacks a manual. "You gotta just make it your own—you don’t know what it’s gonna be," she explained. "Also, there’s reaching out to other people that you admire, the way that they do it and asking them for some advice."
Insights from the Outcome Cast
Bomer offered further wisdom, suggesting that actors should surround themselves with supportive friends. "I would say if you’re lucky like Reef, surround yourself with friends and keep your friends who maybe knew you before as well if you can," he said. "[They] can really ground you and who are gonna be there by your side through the good and the bad and the ups and downs of it all."
Outcome, directed by and starring Jonah Hill, features Reeves as Reef, a Hollywood star on a journey to make amends after a threatening video emerges. The film also includes Susan Lucci, Laverne Cox, David Spade, and Kaia Gerber, marking the first reunion of Diaz and Reeves since their 1996 romcom Feeling Minnesota.
Reeves' Career Resilience and Legacy
Reeves first gained fame with 1989's Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and went on to star in iconic 1990s films like Speed and Point Break. Despite commercial setbacks in the 2000s, he rebounded with the John Wick franchise, re-establishing himself as a respected talent. Diaz praised his consistency, saying, "I’m just so honored to get to work with Keanu as I did 30 years ago. Just to be able to do it again now, I’m really grateful. He’s the same generous, present, such a good human—nothing’s changed in that way."
Reeves reciprocated, noting that working with Diaz felt "the same" as in the 1990s. "It was just kinda like, 'Let’s go to work, let’s play, let’s do whatever we’re doing as best as we can,'" he recalled. "I felt like, whether it’s your fourth film or not, the artist is there."
Outcome premieres on April 10 on Apple TV+, offering audiences a glimpse into Reeves' latest project and the enduring camaraderie among its cast.
