Amorim Backs Carrick's £80m Fernandes Transfer At Man Utd

Ruben Amorim has reportedly given the green light to Michael Carrick over an £80 million move for Mateus Fernandes at Manchester United. The Sporting CP manager previously praised the midfielder before his transfer to Southampton in 2024, describing him as a player with the characteristics to become a great talent.

Fernandes, 21, joined Southampton from Sporting CP but could not prevent their relegation to the Championship. He subsequently moved to West Ham for £38 million plus £4 million in add-ons, but the Hammers have now dropped to the second tier, prompting the Portuguese star to seek another Premier League move.

West Ham have placed an £80 million price tag on Fernandes, with both Manchester United and Arsenal interested. The Red Devils are prioritising midfield reinforcements following Casemiro's departure, and Carrick is keen to add depth ahead of Champions League demands.

United are also closing in on Atalanta's Ederson but view Fernandes as a statement signing. The midfielder made his senior debut for Portugal earlier this year but missed the World Cup squad, potentially allowing United to negotiate during the tournament.

Any deal for Fernandes would benefit Southampton, who hold a 15% sell-on clause, meaning they could bank £12 million if the transfer reaches £80 million.
