Karen Hauer has spoken publicly for the first time about her departure from Strictly Come Dancing after 14 years, describing it as an emotional but necessary step for her personal growth. The 44-year-old professional dancer, who was the longest-serving female pro on the BBC show, announced her exit in March amid a major overhaul that also saw presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman step down.
In an exclusive interview, Hauer revealed that she kept her decision secret from most of her fellow dancers, confiding only in her closest friends. 'I didn't say anything because I know it would have been hard for them to digest,' she said. 'I kept it within my tightest circle.' She added that the outpouring of love she received after the announcement was overwhelming.
Hauer, a Latin dance specialist and World Mambo Champion, said she felt ready to take on new challenges. 'It was very emotional, but it did feel like I was ready to get my teeth stuck into other projects and continue evolving,' she told the Mirror. 'It's always about growth. It was a beautiful decision that came from a good place in my heart.'
Despite the significant changes to the show's lineup, Hauer expressed confidence that Strictly will continue to thrive. 'Even before I was on the show, when we saw Bruce Forsyth leave and then Len Goodman, it's always got bigger and better,' she said. 'Now, there's new energy coming in. The next generation is only going to lift it even more.'
Hauer is set to tour the UK this summer in a reimagined production of the comedy Stepping Out, playing Mavis, a dance instructor. She said the role resonated with her after closing her Strictly chapter. 'It just fell into my lap at exactly the right time,' she said.
