Jimmy Lai Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison Under Chinese Security Law

British national Jimmy Lai, aged 78, has been handed a 20-year prison sentence by Hong Kong authorities under a security law imposed by China. The pro-democracy campaigner and founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper was convicted on charges including conspiring with others to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiracy to publish seditious articles.

Foreign Secretary Condemns 'Politically Motivated' Prosecution

In a strongly worded statement, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the prosecution as politically motivated and called for an end to Lai's "appalling ordeal." She asserted that Lai had merely been exercising his right to freedom of expression, and criticised Beijing's National Security Law as a tool to silence critics of China.

"For the 78-year-old, this is tantamount to a life sentence," Cooper stated, expressing deep concern for Lai's health. She highlighted issues such as heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and diabetes reported by his lawyer, Robert Pang, in January. Cooper urged the Hong Kong authorities to release Lai on humanitarian grounds so he could be reunited with his family.

UK Government Engages at Highest Levels

The UK government has escalated its diplomatic efforts regarding Lai's case. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer raised the matter directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a visit last month, characterising their discussion as "respectful." Cooper noted that this engagement has opened up direct dialogue on acute concerns with the Chinese government at the highest levels.

She affirmed that the government would "rapidly engage further" on the case, reiterating Britain's commitment to the people of Hong Kong and the historical obligations under the legally binding Sino-British Joint Declaration. "China must do the same," Cooper emphasised, underscoring the need for adherence to international agreements.

Legal and Health Concerns Mount

Jimmy Lai's legal troubles began with his arrest in August 2020, following years of criticism directed at the Hong Kong and Beijing governments through his newspaper. The recent sentencing includes eighteen years for national security-related offences, to run consecutively with a prior term of five years and nine months for fraud.

His defence team has repeatedly voiced alarms over his deteriorating health, citing multiple medical conditions that could be exacerbated by imprisonment. The case has drawn international attention, highlighting tensions between China's security policies and human rights standards.

The UK's stance reflects broader geopolitical concerns, as it balances diplomatic relations with China while advocating for democratic principles and the rule of law in Hong Kong. The ongoing situation underscores the challenges faced by dissidents under China's expanding legal framework in the region.
