Iran Dismisses Trump's Peace Talk Claims as 'Fake News' Amid Escalating Tensions
Donald Trump has asserted that the United States and Iran are engaged in discussions aimed at achieving a "total resolution of hostilities," but Iranian officials have vehemently denied these claims, labelling them as "fake news." The US president issued a five-day deadline for Iran to reach a peace deal, warning that failure could lead to the country being "annihilated." In a recent statement, Trump described the talks as "very good and productive," a characterization rejected by the Iranian parliament speaker, who insisted no negotiations have taken place.
Military Pause and Global Economic Ripples
Trump announced a temporary halt on US military strikes targeting Iranian energy sites, just hours before a previous 48-hour ultimatum concerning the Strait of Hormuz was set to expire. He stated, "We were planning tomorrow on shooting down some of their power plants, we’re gonna hold that up, hopefully we won't have to do it." This pause has contributed to fluctuations in global oil markets, with Brent crude oil prices jumping back above $100 per barrel due to ongoing supply fears. Analysts note that while the immediate threat of attacks has diminished, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt approximately one-fifth of the world's oil shipments, causing widespread economic concerns.
International Responses and Domestic Pressures
The conflict has prompted significant international reactions. South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok canceled a trip to China to address domestic economic issues stemming from the war, highlighting the global impact. Meanwhile, Japan has initiated the release of oil from joint stockpiles, contributing nearly 80 million barrels to efforts coordinated by the International Energy Agency to stabilise markets. In the European Union, Chief Ursula von der Leyen indicated that the bloc might consider an operation to secure the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities cease, emphasising the critical situation for worldwide energy supplies.
Regional Escalations and Political Fallout
Further complicating the scenario, Israel conducted airstrikes in Beirut, and Iraq's Shi'ite Popular Mobilisation Force blamed the US for an attack that killed a commander. Domestically, Trump faces growing criticism, with conservative figures urging Vice President JD Vance to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. Trump's special envoy has traveled to Pakistan, which has offered to host talks, though Iranian participation remains uncertain. The president's comments about jointly controlling the Strait of Hormuz with Iran's leadership have added to the diplomatic uncertainty, as the waterway remains a focal point of the conflict.
