Harry Hill's Gruelling TV Burp Schedule Triggered Severe Paranoia
Comedian Harry Hill has candidly discussed a period of intense stress and exhaustion during the production of his popular ITV series, Harry Hill's TV Burp, which led to alarming bouts of paranoia. The 61-year-old entertainer revealed in a recent interview with The Times that the relentless demands of the show caused him to become convinced someone was attempting to assassinate him.
Exhaustion and Paranoia: A Stress-Induced Reaction
Hill explained that he did not respond well to the pressure and celebrity attention that accompanied the success of TV Burp, a surreal comedy programme where he reviewed television clips. The comedian, who has always shunned the red carpet lifestyle, found the stress overwhelming. His exhaustion peaked in 2012, following a gruelling production schedule, when he was photographed while out with his children, sparking tabloid interest.
This fatigue culminated in a paranoid episode where Hill discovered a hole in his car windscreen and immediately believed it was evidence of a murder plot against him. I was convinced that someone was trying to kill me, he admitted, highlighting the severe mental toll of his work.
Impact on Personal Life and Relationships
The stress also strained his personal life, particularly his marriage to artist Magda Archer, whom he wed in 1996. Hill confessed to being very hard to live with during filming, worrying that his constant anxiety would damage their relationship. He noted that Archer created a painting titled My Life Is Crap around that time, which he feared was a reflection of his behaviour. However, he credited her as the grounding force in his life, stating, she is the one who grounds me.
TV Burp's Legacy and Hill's Critique of Modern Television
TV Burp enjoyed an 11-year run on ITV, earning numerous accolades including Bafta TV Awards and British Comedy Awards, with Hill himself receiving nominations at the National Television Awards. Despite its success, Hill has criticised contemporary television commissioners for lacking innovation. In a December interview on the Beyond the Title podcast, he argued that both the BBC and ITV now avoid developing new or risky content, suggesting that TV Burp would likely be cancelled after one season if launched today.
He lamented the current Saturday night schedules, dominated by celebrity quiz shows, and emphasised that comedy often requires time to refine. Comedy is never right the first time, Hill stated, pointing out that historical successes often emerged from initial imperfections.
New Ventures: A Return to Comedy on YouTube
Following a UK theatre tour, Hill is returning to screens with a brand new YouTube comedy show, The Harry Hill Show. The series features guest appearances from friends such as comedian Stewart Lee and Irish pop star CMAT, marking a fresh chapter in his career. This move comes as he reflects on the challenges of his past while embracing new creative opportunities in the digital space.
