Harry and Meghan Commence Jordan Visit to Amplify Humanitarian Efforts
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, have embarked on a significant two-day official visit to Jordan, with a primary focus on drawing international attention to vital humanitarian initiatives in the Middle East. This trip marks a concerted effort to spotlight projects supporting communities severely impacted by ongoing conflict and displacement in the region.
Focus on Medical Evacuations and Health Programmes
During their itinerary, the Sussexes will visit specific projects they have financially supported, which are instrumental in facilitating the medical evacuation of children from the Gaza conflict zone to Jordan. Their schedule includes high-level meetings with Jordanian leaders and senior health officials, engagements with World Health Organisation (WHO) teams, and inspections of frontline health and mental health programmes operating in the area.
The couple will also meet with staff from World Central Kitchen, who are coordinating essential food relief efforts for Gaza from Amman. Additionally, a visit to the youth centre run by the social development organisation Questscope is planned, where Harry and Meghan will hear directly from young people participating in creative and wellbeing programmes designed to foster resilience.
Background and Invitation Details
This visit is being undertaken at the personal invitation of Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organisation. Since stepping back from their roles as working royals in 2020 to pursue personal and financial independence, the Sussexes have relocated to California but have continued to conduct foreign visits reminiscent of their former official duties.
Their partnership with the WHO dates back to 2021, when they collaborated on a global campaign promoting vaccine equity and co-hosted a high-level event at the UN General Assembly. Their charitable foundation has also worked extensively with the organisation on initiatives aimed at ending violence against children worldwide.
Royal Family Context and Security Developments
The Jordan visit coincides with a period of notable turmoil within the British royal family, following the recent arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in a public office. While Prince Harry has maintained public silence regarding these family developments, his memoir, Spare, previously addressed issues surrounding his uncle, noting that despite allegations linked to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, there was no indication Andrew would lose his taxpayer-funded security.
In a related development, after Prince Harry lost a Court of Appeal challenge in May last year concerning his security arrangements in the UK, the Home Office has reportedly ordered a full threat assessment for the first time since 2020. This move signals a potential major policy reversal, with indications that Harry's taxpayer-funded armed protection may be reinstated for future visits to the United Kingdom.
