Halo Voice Actor Demands White House Remove Propaganda Video Using His Voice
Halo Voice Actor Demands White House Remove Propaganda Clip

Veteran voice actor Steve Downes, renowned for portraying the iconic Master Chief in the Halo video game series, has issued a formal demand to the White House to remove a social media propaganda clip that features his voice and imagery of his character without permission. The 75-year-old performer took to the platform X on Sunday to publicly distance himself from the video, which promotes ongoing military efforts in Iran under the caption 'JUSTICE THE AMERICAN WAY'.

Unauthorised Use of Character and Voice

Downes stated unequivocally that he had no involvement in the creation of the clip and does not endorse its message. 'It has come to my attention that there is at least one propaganda video circulating that was either produced or at the very least endorsed by the White House that uses images of Master Chief and uses my voice to support the war in Iran,' Downes declared. He emphasised, 'Let me make this crystal clear: I did not participate in nor was I consulted, nor do I endorse the use of my voice in this video, or the message it conveys.' The actor concluded with a forceful demand: 'I demand that the producers of this disgusting and juvenile war porn remove my voice immediately.'

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The video, which was posted on March 5, also included clips featuring notable Hollywood figures such as Russell Crowe, Keanu Reeves, Bob Odenkirk, Bryan Cranston, Mel Gibson, and Tom Cruise. However, Downes' strong reaction sparked a wave of mixed responses from users on X. Some criticised his stance, with one user commenting, 'You should be happy. This is the most relevant halo has been since the Bush Administration.' Another questioned, 'Can you be any more cringe?' arguing that viewers would not interpret the ad as reflecting Downes' personal political views.

Further criticism emerged from users who suggested that Downes' disavowal conflicted with the nature of the Halo franchise itself. One user pointed out, 'Master Chief was, "Bred for combat, built for war" according to the original packaging for Halo CE. So, the entire idea from the beginning was glorifying war for fun. Do you denounce your career?' Another dismissive comment added, 'Most people don't even know who you are' alongside a graphic stating, 'No one cares.'

Downes' Career and Legacy

Steve Downes began voicing Master Chief in 2001, following a distinguished four-decade career in radio. In a 2021 interview with Game Crater, he recounted how composer Martin O’Donnell recommended him for the role without an audition. 'It's the biggest role of my life and still the only role I never auditioned for, which is strange because voice actors spend their life auditioning and being rejected most of the time,' Downes shared. He expressed deep appreciation for the fan community, noting, 'It’s a positive feedback loop; you give to me and I give back to you. After all, I’m living a childhood dream; what little boy or girl growing up didn’t dream of being a superhero?'

The Daily Mail has contacted the White House for comment regarding this controversy, but no official response has been provided at this time. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between creative professionals and political entities over the unauthorised use of intellectual property for propaganda purposes.
