The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Kay Beckenham, a British model and close personal friend of the late music icon George Michael. Following Beckenham's death, her daughter decided to auction a collection of personal items that George Michael had gifted to her mother over the years. The sale, handled by Omega Auctions, included highly sentimental and valuable pieces that offered a glimpse into their private friendship.
Among the standout lots was a pair of Cutler and Gross wrap-around sunglasses, which sold for an astonishing £5,700. Other notable items included an engraved Faith tour belt buckle that fetched £700, a Cartier watch sold for £1,900, and a Bulgari 18ct gold ladies watch that went for £1,200.
A Bond That Spanned Decades
In a heartfelt letter provided to the auction house, Beckenham's daughter paid tribute to George Michael, describing him as a "kind" presence in their lives. She revealed that her mother and the singer shared a "strong, loving and enduring bond that began at the very start of his career."
The letter detailed how Michael was asked to be the godfather to Beckenham's daughter in 1999 and even helped host her parents' wedding on Necker Island, owned by Virgin founder Richard Branson. "I have vivid memories—formed later through photographs—of George travelling with my parents, clambering into private jets, and setting off on adventures together," she wrote.
From Modelling Fame to Musical Connections
Kay Beckenham was considered one of the most sought-after models of her era, frequently mingling with supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. It was through these high-profile connections that she reportedly helped George Michael secure these models for his iconic 1990 music video for "Freedom."
Beckenham, believed to have been in her 60s at the time of her death, was also a beneficiary of George Michael's £98 million estate following his passing in 2016, underscoring the depth of their relationship.
Omega Auctions commented on the significance of the auctioned items, stating, "These pieces tell a story of loyalty, trust and the man behind the icon."
