Why Everybody Wants Some!! Is My Go-To Feelgood Film
The latest in a series of writers celebrating their comfort movies takes us back to 1980 with Richard Linklater's delightful hangout comedy, Everybody Wants Some!!. This film consistently brings a big smile to my face, and it has become an annual viewing tradition since its release in 2016.
A Nostalgic Journey to College Life
Serving as a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused, the movie follows Jake, portrayed by Blake Jenner, a quiet and naive baseball player in the days before he starts college. He moves into campus housing with his new teammates, each a star prospect from their schools. The ensemble cast, including Wyatt Russell and Tyler Hoechlin, excels in their roles, with chemistry that shines on screen, thanks to three weeks of pre-filming bonding at Linklater's ranch.
Glen Powell's solid supporting role as Finnegan marked his first big break, highlighting the industry's push to elevate his career. The film captures Jake quickly finding his tribe, singing along to Rapper's Delight and joining in jokes within hours of meeting his teammates. While hazing rituals occur, like a sit-up into a sweaty undercarriage, it's all in good fun, summed up by Powell's character: "You accept your chumpification, wear it well and pass it on."
Beyond Testosterone-Filled Comedy
It's easy to dismiss Everybody Wants Some!! as just another buddy comedy filled with jocks and pranks, as critic Mark Kermode likened it to "Porky's shot by an A-list director." However, this comparison falls short because the women in the film are never humiliated; they interact comfortably with the guys, set to a soundtrack featuring Blondie, Pete Townshend, Eddie Rabbitt, and Devo that builds a feelgood atmosphere.
Defying conventional film-making advice, the movie has no real stakes—characters focus solely on fun and baseball, offering pure escapism. The closest to conflict is a few heated exchanges with an intense pitcher, refreshingly avoiding a forced third-act fallout. Linklater's flair for dialogue shines with lines like, "they're intelligent girls, you have to rise and meet them on their level," and character moments, such as housemates wiping hands after shaking with a pitcher, add depth.
Building Connections and Joy
Despite constant ribbing, the teammates support each other, as seen in wingman scenarios. Linklater noted in a 2016 interview, "You work through jock bravado and realise they're not bad guys. They surprise you." The group explores diverse social scenes, from a country bar to a disco and a theatre student party, enjoying each experience. Their pursuit of women and new adventures leads to genuine fun, making viewers feel part of the joy.
Jake's romance with Beverly, played by Zoey Deutch, adds a sweet layer with dorky phone flirting and smitten moments. Whether their relationship lasts is left open, but the hope of a bright future is satisfying, and his friends cheer him on. The film concludes with Jake smiling in his first class after a romantic night, leaving audiences with that same joyful feeling.
Everybody Wants Some!! is available on Paramount+ in the US, for digital rental in the UK, and on Amazon Prime in Australia, ensuring fans can revisit this feelgood gem anytime.
