Don Gilet Praises New Death in Paradise Star Catherine Garton as 'Great'
Don Gilet Hails New Death in Paradise Star Catherine Garton

In an exclusive interview, Death in Paradise actor Don Gilet has warmly welcomed new cast member Catherine Garton to the popular BBC series, offering high praise for her portrayal of Sergeant Mattie Fletcher. Gilet, who plays Detective Mervin Wilson, spoke candidly about the fresh energy Garton brings to the show, emphasising that her character is a vibrant addition rather than a replacement for the departed Darlene Curtis.

A New Dynamic for Saint Marie

Garton steps into the role of Mattie Fletcher, the latest officer to join the Saint Marie police force. This follows the quiet exit of Ginny Holder's character, Darlene Curtis, who only appeared via video link in the Christmas special. Gilet was quick to clarify that Mattie is not a direct replacement, stating firmly, "You cannot replace that character." Instead, he described her arrival as introducing "a completely different energy that we weren't expecting."

The actor elaborated on how Mattie's presence shakes up the dynamic among the characters, noting, "The arrival of Mattie surprises us all as characters, and she's a very colourful and larger-than-life character as well. So it's always great." He compared it to the infusion of new guest characters each episode, which helps keep the series fresh and engaging.

Building Connections and Rebellious Spirit

Gilet further revealed that viewers will learn about Mattie gradually as she attempts to connect with her colleagues, a process he likened to his own character's struggles. "She tries to connect with her colleagues, the same way I tried to connect with my colleagues, and it didn't happen very easily," he shared. He praised Garton's performance, highlighting a rebellious edge that resonates with Mervin's own unorthodox methods.

"She's a great character to work with, and there's a rebelliousness to the character that Catherine brings, which in some ways is similar to the way that Mervin works," Gilet explained. He speculated that this might lead to a hint of admiration from Mervin, adding, "So I wonder if there's just a little tinge of admiration for the way she works that is a bit unorthodox."

Tonight's Episode and Series Details

The new series continues with an intriguing episode tonight, available for streaming on BBC iPlayer. The synopsis sets the scene: "A reclusive pensioner is shot dead in his home, and a figure matching the description of an unassuming accountant was witnessed fleeing the crime scene." However, the plot thickens as the suspect possesses a rock-solid alibi, promising a classic Death in Paradise mystery.

Meanwhile, subplots add depth, with the commissioner launching a community-focused initiative to win back the islanders' trust. Tensions are set to rise when Mervin goes rogue during the event, hinting at the chaotic yet compelling storytelling fans have come to love. Death in Paradise airs on Friday at 9pm on BBC One, continuing its long-standing tradition of sun-soaked crime drama with a twist of humour and heart.
