Disney's Live-Action Remake Slate Continues Despite Robin Hood Cancellation
Disney Live-Action Remakes Continue Despite Cancellation

Disney's extensive lineup of live-action remakes is set to continue through 2026 and beyond, despite the recent cancellation of one highly anticipated project. While many film enthusiasts perceive this trend as a modern phenomenon, the studio has actually been reimagining its animated classics in live-action form since the 1990s.

A Legacy of Live-Action Adaptations

The journey began with the 1994 version of The Jungle Book, which was swiftly followed by the more memorable and critically acclaimed 1996 release of 101 Dalmatians. This film even spawned a sequel, 102 Dalmatians, featuring Glenn Close reprising her iconic role as Cruella de Vil. Since those early days, Disney has produced numerous remakes, ranging from timeless classics like Snow White and Pinocchio to more recent animated hits such as Aladdin and the latest adaptation, Lilo & Stitch.

Robin Hood Project Cancelled

Despite this relentless pace, one project will not proceed. Described as a CGI hybrid production, an updated version of Robin Hood has been officially cancelled. This news may come as a relief to longtime fans of the original 1973 animated film, which famously portrayed the titular character as a fox. However, this cancellation does not signal a broader slowdown in Disney's remake strategy.

Upcoming Releases in 2026 and Beyond

The next live-action remake scheduled for release is Moana, slated to hit cinemas on July 10, 2026. Unlike many previous adaptations, this film will see the return of one of its biggest stars in a significant role. Dwayne Johnson is not only serving as an executive producer but will also reprise his role as Maui.

Following Moana, the next anticipated release is a reimagined version of Tangled. Celebrated comic actress Kathryn Hahn, known for her role in Agatha All Along, has confirmed via social media that she has been cast as Mother Gothel. The original Tangled, a retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale, grossed over $590 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Hercules and Beyond

Subsequently, a remake of the 1997 animated film Hercules is expected to come to fruition, likely capitalizing on the recent success of its musical stage adaptation. While it remains unclear whether original stars like James Woods (Hades) or Danny DeVito (Phil) will return, Guy Ritchie is attached to direct, with Marvel's Russo brothers lined up as producers.

Additionally, at least four more Disney live-action projects are in development, though directors have not yet been confirmed. Three of these projects have screenwriters actively working on scripts. This lineup includes a remake of Bambi, sequels for Lilo & Stitch and Cruella starring Emma Stone, and a film focused on the Beauty and the Beast character Gaston.

Disney's commitment to expanding its live-action universe demonstrates a strategic focus on leveraging beloved intellectual properties, ensuring a steady stream of nostalgic yet fresh content for audiences worldwide.
