Deadliest Catch Star's Brain Injury Preceded Tragic Overboard Death at 25
Todd Meadows, a star of the Discovery Channel reality series Deadliest Catch, allegedly suffered a traumatic brain injury at work just weeks before his untimely death at age 25. According to reports from TMZ, Meadows fell overboard from the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady in the treacherous Bering Sea on February 25, 2026.
Concussion and Medical Leave Before Tragedy
Meadows's mother, Angela Meadows, revealed that her son had taken a blow to the head about a month ago while working on the Aleutian Lady. In line with injury protocols, he saw a doctor who allegedly determined he had suffered a concussion, a form of traumatic brain injury that occurs when the brain suddenly moves or twists within the skull.
He was placed on medical leave and flown back to Washington to recover for around a week, which marked the final time his family saw him alive. "The last photo I got of him was when he was building a fire. He was listening to music in the moment and was so happy," Angela Meadows said. "That's how I want to remember him."
After being cleared to return to work, Meadows was back on the vessel when the fatal incident occurred. His death remains under investigation by the US Coast Guard.
Family's Plea to Discovery Channel
Angela Meadows has made a heartfelt plea to Discovery Channel producers, urging them not to air any footage of her son's fatal fall. "We don’t want to see any footage from the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son’s death," she told TMZ. "We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat."
Instead, the family has requested clips of Todd crabbing at sea so they can remember him doing what he loved and "have the videos for memories." She stressed that while the family is not looking to point fingers, they expect accountability. "We don’t want to put the blame on anyone, but someone has to take responsibility. We will have justice for Todd," she said.
Footage Confirmed and Investigation Details
Trey John Green III, Meadows's bunkmate, confirmed that cameras were rolling when the tragedy occurred. "Discovery is done filming, but there was a producer and a deck cam guy on the boat for the past two months filming for season 22 of the show. It was filmed, unfortunately," Green told UsWeekly. He added that a deck cam records 24/7 and captured the entire incident.
According to the US Coast Guard, Meadows was recovered unresponsive by the crew approximately ten minutes after falling overboard. First aid and attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful, and the crew transported the deceased to Dutch Harbor. An autopsy has been performed, and the investigation is ongoing.
Legacy and Support for His Family
Todd Meadows leaves behind three young sons. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support the boys has already raised more than $30,000. The description notes that Meadows was a determined father who did everything for his children, and the funds will assist with funeral expenses and help the family navigate the difficult months ahead.
Captain Rick Shelford, owner of the Aleutian Lady, paid tribute to Meadows on Facebook, calling it "the most tragic day in the history" of the vessel. He described Meadows as having a contagious smile and a strong work ethic, quickly becoming part of the crew's family. "Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood," Shelford wrote.
The Discovery Channel released a statement expressing deep sadness over Meadows's passing: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time."
