Chappell Roan headlined the Laneway Festival in Sydney's Centennial Park on Sunday, closing the day with a medieval-themed pop spectacle. The singer performed on a castle set inspired by the 1980s fantasy film 'The Dark Crystal', complete with spiralling stairs, pyrotechnics, and dragon visuals. The sold-out crowd of 50,000 sang along to hits like 'Hot to Go' and 'Femininomenon'.
The festival featured a strong pop lineup, including PinkPantheress, Role Model, and Australian trio Blusher. Role Model brought out the Wiggles—including original Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt—for his song 'Sally, When the Wine Runs Out', with the crowd chanting 'Wake up Jeff!'
PinkPantheress performed on a smaller tented stage, which limited visibility for many fans. Despite this, her high-energy set showed improvement from her earlier reputation as a so-so performer. The Dare, Benee, Wet Leg, Wolf Alice, Oklou, and Geese also performed.
Laneway's pop strategy has paid off, with the festival thriving post-Covid. The event continues in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth until 15 February.
