British Couple Held as 'Human Shields' in Iran, Family Alleges
The family of a British couple detained in Iran has accused authorities of using them as 'human shields' amidst escalating tensions between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance, while expressing deep frustration with the British government's efforts to secure their release. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who were arrested in January 2025 during a motorcycle world tour through Iran, were sentenced to 10 years in prison last year on espionage charges, which they vehemently deny.
Harsh Conditions in Evin Prison
Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman's son, has provided harrowing details of his parents' living conditions in Tehran's notorious Evin prison. He described the facility as infested with rats and cockroaches, and noted that a recent explosion occurred near the prison, heightening safety concerns. Bennett emphasised that the couple's health and well-being are deteriorating under these harsh circumstances, with limited access to medical care and basic amenities.
Family Criticises UK Government Response
The Foreman family has openly criticised the British government for what they perceive as insufficient progress in negotiating the couple's release. While the UK government has condemned the sentence as 'totally unjustifiable', Bennett expressed disappointment with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper's handling of the case, feeling that his parents have been effectively abandoned. He argued that more decisive diplomatic action is urgently needed, given the geopolitical context where the couple may be leveraged as bargaining chips.
Background of the Detention
The Foremans' detention was first announced by Iranian state media in February 2025, shortly after their arrest the previous month. They were on a global motorcycle journey when they entered Iran, a stop on their itinerary that turned into a prolonged ordeal. The espionage charges against them have been widely disputed by international observers and human rights groups, who view the case as politically motivated.
The family remains determined to secure the safe return of Lindsay and Craig Foreman, calling for increased public awareness and stronger international pressure on Iran. They warn that without swift intervention, the couple's situation could worsen, particularly as regional conflicts intensify.
