A distressed British mother has broken her silence about the arrest of her daughter in Dubai, expressing profound confusion and fear as the young woman potentially faces life imprisonment. However, her life took a drastic turn last month when she was detained under UAE narcotics legislation on suspicion of "possession of narcotics with intent to promote."
Legal advisers have confirmed that Dubai authorities do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute for such charges, according to a statement from the advocacy group Detained in Dubai. If convicted, Bettridge could receive a life sentence and a fine of up to AED 200,000, leaving her family devastated and seeking clarity.

Antonia's mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous, described her daughter as someone whose "whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living" and not a party lifestyle. She moved to Dubai to build a positive future, making the arrest all the more shocking. "We are worried sick," the mother said. "With everything happening in the region at the moment, it is incredibly frightening knowing our daughter is in detention and we cannot reach her."

Antonia Bettridge previously appeared at Liverpool Crown Court in September 2023, where she was found guilty of possessing criminal property after police discovered £8,000 in her vehicle's glove compartment during a stop in December 2021. A spokesperson for the FCDO stated that they are supporting the British woman detained in the UAE and are in contact with local authorities.
