Andrea Bocelli Extends Concert Invite to Timothée Chalamet Amid Opera and Ballet Controversy

Legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli has invited actor Timothée Chalamet to one of his concerts after the Hollywood star made controversial comments suggesting that "no one cares" about opera and ballet. The 67-year-old Italian performer issued a statement urging the "sensitive" actor to appreciate the enduring beauty and emotion of classical arts.

Bocelli's Response to Chalamet's Remarks

In a statement to PEOPLE, Andrea Bocelli expressed his belief that Timothée Chalamet, who is nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for Marty Supreme, could discover the power of opera and dance through live experience. "I am convinced that a sensitive performer like Timothée, who understands the power of emotions, may one day discover that opera and dance draw from that very same source," Bocelli said.

He added, "Sometimes it only takes a few minutes of hearing this music live to understand why, after centuries, it continues to be loved all over the world." Bocelli emphasized that these art forms have "crossed centuries and continue to speak to the human heart, because they answer a deep need for beauty, truth and emotion."

Backlash from the Arts Community

Timothée Chalamet's comments, which resurfaced from a Variety interview with Matthew McConaughey, have sparked fierce criticism from prominent figures in opera and ballet. Ballet dancer Misty Copeland, who promoted Chalamet's film Marty Supreme last year, responded at an Aveeno panel, stating that opera and ballet have "enduring relevance in culture" despite not being as popular as movies.

"I think it’s often mistaken when something is popular that it’s meaningful or more impactful. There’s a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years," Copeland argued. She also noted that Chalamet "wouldn't be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren’t for opera and ballet."

Additional Criticism from West End and Opera Stars

West End icon Michael Ball, known for his baritone voice in musical theatre, also criticized Chalamet's remarks in an interview with Magic Radio. "The human race have been dancing and singing since we could walk, since we came out of the primordial swamp, it ain't going anywhere," Ball said, highlighting the dedication of performers.

US opera singer Isabel Leonard took to social media to call Chalamet "weak" and "narrow-minded," while Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny described his take as "disappointing," urging support for live theatre arts.

Chalamet's Oscar Prospects and Awards History

Timothée Chalamet, 30, is up for his third Best Actor Oscar nomination for Marty Supreme, making him the youngest actor to achieve this since Marlon Brando in the 1950s. However, his awards season has faced setbacks, with Marty Supreme winning nothing at the BAFTAs despite 11 nominations, and Chalamet losing at the Actor's Awards.

If he wins the Oscar, he would become the second-youngest Best Actor winner ever. The film received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
