Ben Shephard's Emotional Apology Letter to Father Over 'Dysfunctional' Past
Ben Shephard's Apology Letter to Father Over Dysfunctional Past

ITV presenter Ben Shephard has publicly shared the heartfelt contents of an emotional apology letter he once penned to his father, candidly addressing what he describes as a historically "dysfunctional" relationship between them. The 51-year-old This Morning host opened up about years of frequent clashes with his dad, who also served as his rugby coach during his formative years.

A Tumultuous Father-Son Dynamic

In a revealing interview with The Big Issue, Shephard admitted that he and his father "clashed an awful lot" throughout his adolescence, struggling to connect meaningfully outside the realm of sports. He characterised their bond during that period as fundamentally dysfunctional, marked by misunderstandings and tension.

The Turning Point: A Letter of Reconciliation

The pivotal moment arrived when Shephard, while travelling solo around the world, composed a sincere letter of apology to his father. "It was my way of saying, 'Sorry, you were right - I can see what you were trying to do,'" he explained. This written gesture served as a profound turning point, allowing him to express regret for his previous lack of understanding and respect.

Shephard elaborated that the experience of independence during his travels granted him newfound clarity. "It was this moment of adventure, being on my own but also realising what you need in order to be independent," he said. "I finally understood what my dad had been trying to give me for years - the discipline and organisation I didn’t have."

Reflection and Maturity

With the benefit of maturity and life experience, Shephard now recognises that his father's strictness stemmed from good intentions and a desire to provide structure. Reflecting on what advice he would give his younger self, the presenter stated: "Listen to what your dad's saying, because he knows what he's talking about."

He also disclosed that his father cherished the letter, keeping it in his briefcase throughout his working life. "I think he’s probably still got it," Shephard added, highlighting the enduring significance of their reconciliation.

Family Background and Work Ethic

Shephard grew up in Epping, Essex, with his parents and siblings, Toby and Alex. He reflected on the "incredible sacrifices" his parents made to ensure a good life for their children, including sending them to private school. Inspired by their strong work ethic, Shephard expressed his intention to continue working for as long as he physically can.

His relentless schedule currently includes presenting This Morning, filming Tipping Point, and fronting ITV's new programme The Summit. While acknowledging that the pace can sometimes feel overwhelming, he insists he thrives on being busy, a trait he attributes to his father's influence. "Part of me, and maybe this comes from my dad, thinks, if I stop, what happens? I thrive on being busy," he remarked.

Personal Life and Balance

Away from his television commitments, Shephard has been married to his wife Annie since 2004, and they share two sons, Sam, 21, and Jack, 19. He acknowledged that they "lead quite separate lives" due to their respective careers—Annie works in garden and interior design—but emphasised that she remains "the most important factor in our lives as a family."

Shephard, who was recently unveiled as Conkers on ITV's The Masked Singer, concluded by noting that in his spare time, he prefers engaging in physical activities, maintaining a balance between his professional drive and personal well-being.
