BBC Morning Live Presenter Gethin Jones Takes Leave for Commonwealth Games Duties

BBC Morning Live presenter Gethin Jones has been granted leave from the popular morning show this week as he embraces his significant role as Team Wales' chef de mission for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Welsh presenter, who typically co-hosts alongside Helen Skelton, has been noticeably absent from the broadcast throughout the week, with the show's management expressing full support for his temporary departure.

Substitute Hosts Step In During Jones' Absence

In Jones' absence, Helen Skelton has been joined by a rotating roster of guest presenters including Rav Wilding, Holly Hamilton, Gordon Smart, and former Olympic athlete Greg Rutherford. This temporary hosting arrangement ensures the show continues seamlessly while Jones fulfills his Commonwealth Games responsibilities in Scotland.

Jones' Chef de Mission Role Explained

Appointed to the prestigious position last year, the 48-year-old presenter will serve as the figurehead for the Welsh team throughout the Games. His comprehensive responsibilities include leading and inspiring athletes and support staff, representing Wales at official functions, and acting as the primary spokesperson for Team Wales. Jones traveled to Scotland at the beginning of the week alongside fellow chefs de mission from all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories for a series of seminars, presentations, and workshops.

"I'm off this week and my boss is incredibly supportive of it," Jones revealed in an interview. "I think we're off air at the end of July, so it works out unbelievably well, but after this we'll be looking at the King's Baton Relay and the kit launch as well, which is so exciting."

Preparing for the Ambassador Role

Jones described his preparation for the role as "absolutely fascinating" and emphasized that his position is primarily ambassadorial rather than organizational. "I'm not on the organisational side of things, my role as chef is more ambassadorial, but it's been great to be here to see how it all works and the intricacies," he explained. "The detail is just phenomenal. Everything is geared towards the athletes being in the best environment to succeed when they come here in the summer."

To better prepare for his responsibilities, Jones returned to university to pursue a Master's degree in Sports Directorship and sought advice from sporting friends including Olympic cyclists Becky James and Sir Chris Hoy. "I spoke to so many athletes to try to understand what it's like for someone to wear the red of Wales in a multi-sporting global event," he elaborated.

Key Insights from Sporting Mentors

Jones shared the most crucial piece of wisdom he received from Sir Chris Hoy: "You've got to know everything, and he's absolutely right. We had 214 athletes go to the Gold Coast and I made sure I knew something about every single one of them."

He emphasized that this knowledge isn't just for media purposes but for genuine connection with athletes: "Not because of media or anything, but just for bumping into them in the village and being able to say: 'How is your injury?' or 'How's your mum doing?' or 'How are you going to get on on Tuesday?'"

Emotional Investment in the Role

Jones confessed to feeling both "emotional" and "really chuffed" when he received the job offer, recognizing it as a unique opportunity to support Welsh athletes on a global stage. His dedication to understanding every aspect of the athlete experience reflects his commitment to ensuring Team Wales receives comprehensive support.

"Every athlete likes to be seen and our job as the team behind the team is that we do see the work that goes into it and we appreciate it and give them the best chance to do their best on the day," Jones concluded, highlighting the supportive environment he aims to create for Welsh competitors.
