Bafta TV Awards 2026: A New Era Dawns as Claudia Winkleman Rises to Prominence
The Bafta TV Awards for 2026 have unveiled a nominations list that marks a significant departure from tradition, with long-standing favourites Ant & Dec conspicuously absent from the best entertainment performance category. In their stead, Claudia Winkleman has been nominated for her role in The Celebrity Traitors, positioning her as the new queen of television entertainment. This shift suggests a potential end to an era dominated by figures like Graham Norton and the iconic duo, who have been fixtures throughout the millennium.
Adolescence Leads the Pack with Multiple Nominations
The drama Adolescence, a Netflix series exploring the impact of misogynistic online influences on young men, has garnered an impressive 11 nominations. Despite premiering 14 months ago, its delayed recognition aligns with Bafta's qualifying period from January to December of the previous year. Bookmakers are heavily favouring Stephen Graham for leading actor and Owen Cooper for supporting actor, while Erin Doherty's portrayal of a court-appointed psychologist is a standout, noted for her astonishing stillness and emotional control in a near episode-long single take.
Doherty, 33, achieves a rare Bafta double by also being nominated as best actress for A Thousand Blows on Disney+, a feat most associated with Julie Walters. Similarly, Aimee Lou Wood, 32, is in contention for leading actress in Film Club (BBC) and supporting actress in The White Lotus (Sky Atlantic). Sheridan Smith is expected to secure another best actress win for her emotionally authentic performance in ITV's I Fought the Law.
Unexpected Frontrunners and Notable Omissions
While Adolescence is predicted to win the limited series category, it faces competition from Channel 4's Trespasses, an adaptation of Louise Kennedy's novel set in 1970s Northern Ireland, which has six nominations. This unexpected prominence underscores Channel 4's strategy of funding fewer, high-quality dramas. In contrast, the BBC's absence from key nominations for dramas depicting modern Britain, such as Adolescence, Toxic Town (Netflix), and Trespasses, raises concerns about its role in reflecting contemporary society.
Notable snubs include Jimmy McGovern's Unforgivable, the BBC's Virdee, Disney+'s Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, and Channel 5's The Forsytes. David Tennant continues his unlucky streak with the academy, overlooked for his role in The Hack despite a formidable performance.
Streaming Dominance and Future Implications
The success of streamers like Netflix and Disney+ in producing UK-based content is becoming a significant challenge for the BBC, which leads nominations with 73 but lacks representation in critical drama categories. As outgoing BBC director general Tim Davie faces scrutiny over a Panorama incident leading to a lawsuit from President Trump, his successor, Matt Brittin, must navigate increasing competition from digital giants.
The 2026 ceremonies, set for 26 April (Craft awards) and 10 May (TV Awards), are likely to be dominated by Adolescence. Looking ahead, Bafta organisers hope for late summer and autumn hits to invigorate future juries, as recent years have seen delayed recognition for major shows. This year's nominations reflect a broader trend towards innovation and diversity in television, signalling a vibrant future for the industry.
