Girlguiding UK Swaps Hostess Badge for Celebrations

Girlguiding UK has replaced the traditional Hostess badge with a new 'Think Resilient' award, reflecting a shift towards modern values. The badge, launched this week, was created by Peer Educators from the Senior Section in collaboration with mental health charity Young Minds. It aims to teach girls aged seven to 25 about the importance of mental health.

The Hostess badge, which once required girls to make tea and serve biscuits, has been phased out as part of a broader update of the organisation's awards. Other recent badges include Free Being Me (body confidence), Breaking Barriers (gender equality), and Girls Matter: Hear Our Voice (democracy). These changes highlight Girlguiding's move away from traditional domestic skills towards contemporary issues.

Uniforms have also evolved, with itchy, starchy outfits replaced by polo shirts and hooded tops. The organisation now offers a range of eccentric badges, such as Stargazer and Circus Skills, alongside enduring favourites like First Aid and Agility. The Outdoor Cook badge, for instance, now includes fire safety and treating burns.

Despite the modernisation, traditional badges remain popular. First Aid and Agility are still among the most sought-after awards. The new Chocolate badge, which involves setting up a tasting session, has also gained popularity. Girlguiding says the changes reflect the evolving interests of young people while maintaining core values.
