Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, the only female Royal Navy commando in Britain, has been identified as one of three victims of a helicopter crash in Devon. The incident occurred on Wednesday near Sourton Down, Okehampton.
Lt Fisher, who was based in Yeovil, Somerset, described serving her country as a “massive privilege and a huge honour”. Her achievement as the only British female Royal Navy commando was praised by NATO.
She grew up in Virginia Water, Surrey, and graduated from Imperial College London in 2016 with a degree in geology. After working as an exploration geologist for BP for two years, she resigned in 2018 and accepted a commission in the Royal Navy the following year.
Lt Fisher successfully completed the 16-week All Arms Commando Course, becoming Britain’s only serving female Royal Navy commando. She also represented Great Britain at the European Age Group Triathlon Championships in 2021 and participated in ultra-marathons.
She had previously spoken about her determination, saying: “The body achieves what the mind believes. I love to test myself and challenge myself constantly.” She also appeared on ITV shows Take Me Out and Ninja Warrior UK.
