FBI Director Kash Patel has asserted that the bureau has successfully prevented school shootings through the use of artificial intelligence, a technology he claims was neglected under previous administrations. In an interview with Sean Hannity on Tuesday, Patel stated, “We stopped a school massacre in North Carolina because we got a tip and we were able to triage it with artificial intelligence.” He added that an unrelated school shooting in New York was also thwarted following a tip from private-sector partners collaborating on the FBI’s AI infrastructure.
AI Integration Across the Bureau
Patel emphasized that AI is now being deployed across the FBI’s operations, particularly in the National Threat Operations Center. “I’m using it everywhere,” he told Hannity. The director explained that AI software helps the bureau manage the overwhelming volume of tips it receives weekly, noting, “If we had just humans look at it, we would never sift through them all.” He also highlighted that AI enables agents to “pop fingerprints immediately and get fugitives and arrest warrants out.”
Private Sector Collaboration
Patel boasted of embedding major technology companies within the FBI to overhaul its systems. “I’ve got every major tech company in the world embedded in the FBI, rebuilding our internet capabilities, our classified systems, and the ability for artificial intelligence to be in our counterterrorism program so we can get instantaneous results,” he said. He questioned the value of collecting vast data without the means to analyze it: “What’s the point of collecting terabytes of data if you can’t sift through it?”
Criticism of Predecessors
During the interview, Patel took a swipe at previous FBI leadership, accusing them of prioritizing “weaponization” over “modernization.” He claimed that former directors rejected AI implementation, saying, “The former FBI rejected that notion because they knew…that wasn’t their focus. Their focus was on weaponization, not modernization.”
Public Scrutiny and Satire
Patel has faced significant criticism in recent months, including a parody on Saturday Night Live where actor Aziz Ansari portrayed an exaggerated version of him. In the sketch, Ansari’s character defended the FBI’s investigation into the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, claiming it “could not have been more thorough.” He then quipped, “And for those of you saying I'm doing a bad job running the FBI, well, what if I told you this agency is only six weeks away from pinpointing the exact location of Osama bin Laden?”
