Australia delivers first Abrams tanks to Ukraine in major defence boost

Australia has handed over the first tranche of Abrams tanks to the Ukrainian army, marking a significant step in its support for Kyiv's defence against Russia's invasion. Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed the delivery, stating that the tanks would enhance Ukrainian firepower and complement equipment provided by other allies.

Australia pledged 49 Abrams tanks worth $245 million last October. While the majority have been delivered, the final tranche is expected in the coming months. Exact numbers have not been disclosed. Marles said, 'Australia remains steadfast in our support for Ukraine and seeing a just and lasting peace.'

The delivery comes as the United Nations reports record numbers of Russian missile and drone strikes targeting civilians in Ukraine. June 2025 was the deadliest month for civilians in over three years. Australia will also deploy a Wedgetail aircraft to Europe in August to protect aid corridors to Ukraine.

Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said, 'Australia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine.' Australia has committed more than $1.5 billion in aid since Russia's invasion in February 2022. The government is also negotiating a non-binding security pact with Ukraine, following similar agreements by over two dozen nations.

Areas of cooperation likely include military assistance and collaboration. A second agreement eliminating double taxation to encourage investment in Ukraine's post-war reconstruction is also expected. The UN and humanitarian partners have launched a winter response plan to raise funds for over 1.7 million people facing harsh conditions as Russia targets critical infrastructure.
