Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen Hauer has marked one year of sobriety, describing the achievement as the 'bravest' thing she has ever done. The 43-year-old dancer shared an emotional post on Instagram, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph, reflecting on her journey.
In her message, Hauer wrote: 'One year alcohol free. I faced my raw self for the first time… scared, sad, angry. But also clearer. Pausing. Progressing.' She admitted that she had previously hidden behind a facade of 'just having fun' while struggling internally.
The dancer, who has experienced three divorces, including a recent split from her third husband Jordan Wyn-Jones, said quitting alcohol allowed her to stop 'running from myself'. She explained that she is now learning to understand her emotions and allow herself to feel them as part of her healing process.
Hauer thanked her boyfriend Simon Davidson and her four dogs for their support, adding: 'Here's to many more positive days ahead.' Fellow Strictly stars Vicky Pattison and Jowita Przystal were among those congratulating her.
The news comes amid reports that the BBC has introduced stricter guidelines for its professional dancers, prohibiting swearing, excessive drinking and inappropriate clothing. Hauer has previously spoken about the impact of her past relationships, including her marriage to Kevin Clifton, which she said ended partly due to jealousy and communication issues.
